The Scientific Method

What is the scientific method?
The scientific method is the steps we take to study and learn new things. There are 6 steps in the scientific method: Ask a question Form a hypothesis Plan a procedure Conduct the experiment Record data State the conclusion We must follow these steps in order to solve a problem or answer a question.

Ask a question This is the problem you want to solve in the experiment. You might have a question about something you observed or something you want to learn more about. A good scientific question is one that can be tested using the scientific method.

Hypothesis The next step is to come up with a guess or possible answer to the question that can be tested to see if it is correct or not. Use what you know to make the prediction. A good hypothesis helps you to design your experiment.

Plan a procedure You plan a procedure by making a list of the materials you will need and the steps you will take during your experiment. Write the procedure like a step-by-step recipe for your science experiment.

Conduct the experiment
This is where a test is done to see if a hypothesis is correct or not. Pay close attention during the experiment and use your senses to make observations. While you are conducting your experiment it is important to write your observations down.

Record data Data is information you can record, like what you observe during an experiment. You can record your data in a journal, graph, or chart. Scientists use data to gain understanding and make conclusions.

Conclusion Your conclusion is an explanation of whether the experiment worked or not. Once you collect the data you analyze it to see if your hypothesis is correct or incorrect. Your conclusion should answer the question from step one.
