3 What is a solution? A solution is a homogeneous mixture.
Solutions can be solid, liquid, or gas. Dissolving is making a solution by mixing two or more substances. Ex. Kool-Aid mix and water. But mixing substances does not always make a solution. Ex. Sand and water.

4 What determines whether or not something dissolves?
mall analogy When you put Kool-Aid into water, the particles in the Kool-Aid mix are more attracted to the water particles around them than they are to each other. So, they break up and spread evenly through the water. Lots of substances will dissolve, but it has to be “the right mix.”

5 The Right Mix The right mix has a solute and a solvent.
Ex. Kool-Aid mix and water The solute is the substance that dissolves in the solvent to form a solution. Ex. Kool-Aid mix The solvent is the substance that dissolves a solute to form a solution. Ex. water Soluble means able to be dissolved in a particular solvent. Ex. Kool-Aid mix is soluble in water.
