Aggressive- Use of words or actions that are disrespectful towards others Passive- When someone holds back ideas, feelings, and decisions; they make excuses for their behavior Assertive- The honest expression of feelings, ideas, and decisions without feeling worried or threatened.

4 Effective Communication
Identify ways to express emotions by sharing thoughts with another person “I” messages: a statement focusing on specific behavior, how it affects the person and how they feel “You” messages: a statement that blames another person for doing something Nonverbal communication: use of actions to express emotions or thoughts (rolling eyes, crossing arms)

5 Communication Errors Mind Reading- assuming one’s thoughts or feelings
Avoiding Communication Labeling- using names to verbally attack or threaten Alienating Messages- criticism, put-downs, or aggressive communication

Which of the styles is the best way to communicate? ASSERTIVE! Why? Greater chance of getting what you want You avoid a conflict or fight Maintain healthy relationships
