GSICS Correction Coefficients Strategy for developing Test Dataset

3 Status of GEO-LEO IR ATBDs
Reviewed: EUMETSAT SEVIRI-IASI: web/ATBD_for_EUMETSAT_Inter-Calibration_of_SEVIRI-IASI.DOC NOAA GOES-AIRS JMA MTSAT-AIRS/IASI All now follow same Hierarchical Structure Implemented as single MS Word documents (difficult to manage) Need support from GDWG to create document management system Draft “1 page ReadMe” file describing GSICS Correction Operational Status: EUMETSAT SEVIRI-IASI v0.3 Describes current proto-type algorithm v0.4 Handed-over for Operational implementation EUMETSAT HIRS-IASI (Metop-A) Same ATBD forms basis of proto-type HIRS-IASI comparison

4 Parameters of Static Web Displays – No Feedback!
Collocation Maps Regression Scatter plots With Error bars? Thinned? Time Series of Tb bias at Tbstd Period? <=1yr? Daily, ‘Monthly’ Trends, ‘resets’ (alerts) Multiple Standard Radiances? Regression Coefficients? Download Correction Coefficients NetCDF format Not available yet

5 New NetCDF format for Inter-Calibration Results
Increased flexibility Slightly more complex Store Coefficients (and biases) in 2-D arrays 1 dimension for channels of Instrument Under Test 1 dimension to allow time series of results, ndates and/or results from multiple configurations to be reported, nsets e.g. Smoothed/unsmoothed, night-time/day-time, etc. Multiplexed in single dimension, nselections=ndates.nsets First configuration set is the baseline Added variable to define dates and configurations Proposal follows

6 Re-Revised NetCDF format for Inter-Calibration Results

7 Proposed Configuration Flags
Configurations can be defined by binary flags ;Long Integer comprising 16 bit-pairs, identifying 16 variables: ; Bits:Variable  -00      ,01      ,10      ,11      . ; ; 0, 1:Smoothing -None    ,Weekly  ,Monthly ,Yearly  . ; 2, 3:TimeOfDay -All     ,Night   ,Day     ,Twilight. ; 4, 5:Latitude  -All     ,<30N/S  ,30-60N/S,>60N/S  . ; 6, 7:Longitude -All     ,        ,        ,        . ; 8, 9:Cloudy    -All     ,Clear   ,Overcast,Broken  . ;10,11:Surface   -All     ,OpenSea ,Land    ,SeaIce  . ;12,13:IncAng    -All     ,<15deg  ,15-30deg,>30deg  . ;14,15:AziAng    -All     ,        ,        ,        . ;16,17:PolAng    -All     ,        ,        ,        . ;18,19:SolZenAng -All     ,<30deg  ,30-60deg,>60deg  . ;20,21:SolAziAng -All     ,        ,        ,        . ;22,23:Reserved  -All     ,        ,        ,        . ;24,25:Reserved  -All     ,        ,        ,        . ;26,27:Reserved  -All     ,        ,        ,        . ;28,29:Reserved  -All     ,        ,        ,        . ;30,31:Reserved  -All     ,        ,        ,        . e.g. '0'b=results derived from full dataset, '10'b=2=As 0, but with monthly smoothing, ' 'b=1302=As 0, but with monthly smoothing, night only, tropical, clear sky, over sea, etc.

8 Review of Actions on EUMETSAT from Exec Panel 6
GRWG (F. Wu and T. Hewison) to complete the definition of a consensus GSICS Correction for each geostationary satellite (as a starting point), prepare a description of this GSICS correction, and illustrate it by a test data set. Deadline: 30 June 2009 GRWG to consider the possible recommendations to GRUAN regarding coordinated radio-sondes and satellite observations (involving D. Tobin et al.) and report to Executive Panel Members. Deadline: 31 July 2009 M. Goldberg and J. Schmetz to organize a preliminary evaluation of the impact of GSICS Correction of GOES and MSG data on some key products, for presentation at the User Workshop. Deadline: 21/09/09 Webmeeting 12/05/09: EUMETSAT and NOAA accepted the action that GPRC to submit complete ATBD.

9 Strategy for EUMETSAT Test Dataset
Select MSG product sensitive to inter-calibration changes Largest changes are in IR13.4 ~1K Used in CO2 slicing algorithms to determine cloud top heights Calculate product before and after applying GSICS Correction Validate both against independent reference? A-Train? Only possible for limited datasets!
