GSICS GDWG Report, Toulouse, 9 February 2010 3 Action Status  Beside the formal group meetings (telecons) a lot of discussion took place on the e-mail listserver of GDWG  The discussions helped to clarify details on file naming conventions, NetCDF format content and implementation of the ATBD  The Wiki pages are well established have been used frequently  To highlight:  Progress in GDWG is good and because of the small number of participants very efficient  The group members know each other and work together routinely now, mostly directly by e-mail

GSICS GDWG Report, Toulouse, 9 February 2010 4 Cooperation and Communication tools  The efficient work of the GSICS working groups is facilitated by using  List-servers:  gsics-data-wg@googlegroups.com gsics-data-wg@googlegroups.com  gsics-research@googlegroups.com gsics-research@googlegroups.com  Wiki Pages  Teleconferences (using Centra and WebEx)  Web Sites – Home at: gsics.wmo.int  NetCDF Convention Web Site

GSICS GDWG Report, Toulouse, 9 February 2010 5 GDWG Ongoing Activities  NetCDF naming conventions are being further developed  Migration from NetCDF3 to NetCDF4 has started  GSICS Server has been installed at NOAA  CMA’s Web Site almost ready to be released  Discussion on ATBD documentation is ongoing on the GSICS Wiki pages  Exchange of datasets via GSICS server between agencies has started 

GSICS GDWG Report, Toulouse, 9 February 2010 6 Current Status: GDWG In the GSICS Joint Workgroup II held at NOAA, EUMETSAT GDWG was tasked to take a lead in Development of a GSICS Data and Products Server (Action WG2/01). The status of this development is as follows:  The EUMETSAT Server is operational.  Daily standing orders from the EUMETSAT Data Centre Archive are transferring comparable MFG15, MSG15 and IASI1C source data sets to the server.  Confirmation has been received from the WMO, NOAA, JMA and CMA that these data sets can be discovered and downloaded as specified by the server’s Operations Definition (Proposed EUMETSAT document defining the operations of the server from the administer point of view. The document is available on the GDWG mailing list).  NOAA has developed a data management server based on the EUMETSAT design, it is now mirroring the data on the EUMETSAT data and products server.  EUMETSAT GRWG has uploaded some development GSICS products onto the server. JMA will/has uploaded their development GSICS products onto the server for evaluation.  EUMETSAT has prepared draft GSICS Documentation for server operations, user guides, operations service specification, etc. All document will be uploaded to the GSICS website and mailing lists when released.  The essential requirements of the server as a data exchange platform has been satisfied. The server is ready for operations.

GSICS GDWG Report, Toulouse, 9 February 2010 7 GDWG: Planned Activities (1) Planned activities:  Support to other GPRC’s in implementing their own Data and Products Servers. Finalise a standard implementation for the mechanism for transfer of source data sets between GPRC servers for implementing a network of collaborating GSICS servers.  Support to the GRWG in creation of the first validated calibration products.  Analyse how best to improve the server’s services in terms of the GSICS products created from the source data sets (e.g. automated processes for data access, download and upload FTP clients).  Port the EUMETSAT netCDF data sets from version 3 to version 4 (classic model).  Develop a set of satellite specific meta data and submit these to the Climate and Forecast Committee for inclusion into the CF meta data conventions. Current these conventions are more weather and climate specific. Also investigate whether developing OGC standards in the netCDF area can be introduced into the GSICS data sets.

GSICS GDWG Report, Toulouse, 9 February 2010 8 GDWG: Planned Activities (2) Planned activities:  Definition of additional datasets (collections) on the GSICS servers. Possibility to keep the pixel collocations for ever.  Creation of a defined dataset of all satellite corrections for the same time period as an example data set for evalutration by uses. One month (after June 2009).  Definition documentation for permanent storage and definition of according meta dataset.  Enhancement and better structuring of GSICS Web presence (e.g. clear distinction of GCC and GPRs).

GSICS GDWG Report, Toulouse, 9 February 2010 9 GDWG: Planned Activities (3) Planned activities:  Formal review and acceptance of GSICS products, according the GSICS acceptance procedure.  Statement about QA4EO compliance.  Discussion on setup of helpdesk functionality  Provision of additional datasets

GSICS GDWG Report, Toulouse, 9 February 2010 2 nd GSICS User Workshop Cordoba (Spain)

GSICS GDWG Report, Toulouse, 9 February 2010 GSICS User Workshop 2010  Following the successful first GSICS User Workshop in Bath 2009 it has been decided by the Executive Panel to hold the second User Workshop again during the annual EUMETSAT conference in Cordoba (Spain).  The will again be held during an afternoon (probably on Tuesday 20 September from 13.30h to 18.00h).  If participants do not want to attend the EUMETSAT conference, but only the GSISCS workshop they do not have to register and pay the conference fee.  The agenda and the invitations will be prepared by the Chair of the Executive Panel (Mitch Goldberg).
