1 Actions and consequences empathy DIVERSITY

2 Consequence Action It made me laugh. I felt upset and hurt.
My friend told me a joke... My brother hit me really hard... I stayed out later than my Mum said I could.... I walked my elderly neighbour’s dog to help out... I ran across the road without thinking... Another student called me names... I got an award for effort in school... It made me laugh. I felt upset and hurt. I worried my mum, and I got into trouble. I felt good because my neighbour was happy. I caused an accident. I felt really upset. I felt proud and happy.

3 Actions and consequences
All our actions (spoken and physical) have consequences. Some are good (positive) and some bad (negative). Consequences are a result or an effect. It is important to try to behave in a way that has positive consequences. Today’s learning outcomes: Understand that our actions can have positive and negative consequences. Be able to make choices that aim to create positive consequences.

4 Positive action What positive action could improve these situations?
Negative action and consequences My brother hit me really hard... I stayed out later than my Mum said I could.... I ran across the road without thinking... Another student called me names...

5 Observing actions and consequences
What is the main thing happening? What is the result of this action? How does it make people feel?

6 Disability-related bullying video
Action Consequences Class laugh and find it funny. Tanya gets angry and walks out. Dylan is embarrassed, excluded, lonely and sad. Dylan has a seizure and is bullied by the class.

7 Outcome revealed... What choices did people make?
What action was taken? What were the consequences of these actions? How did this impact on everyone’s feelings? What could be the long term effects of this positive action? What would be the long term effects of negative action? Why is it important to behave and treat people in a way that has positive consequences?

8 What have we learnt? That our actions can have positive and negative consequences. How to make choices that aim to create positive consequence.

9 Empathy Today’s learning outcomes: Understand what empathy is.
Be able to use empathy to change behaviour and build better relationships.

10 Empathy Empathy is considering other people’s feelings – it’s putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.

11 Empathy This can lead to changed behaviour and better relationships
When we empathise… We think about how we are making people feel… This can lead to changed behaviour and better relationships

12 Drama Task Read the scripts and decide who will play each role (Dylan , Tanya, classmates). Be creative to decide on the ending, but keep it realistic – will it be good or bad? Really try to imagine the people’s feelings so you can perform them in a convincing way. You have 10mins to rehearse. Go!

13 Hot seating Take it in turns to hot seat the different characters.
Ask the person in the hot seat about their experience and feelings.

14 Feelings Bad afraid angry annoyed anxious bad confused depressed
embarrassed envious excluded Bad frightened helpless hurt jealous lonely naughty nervous panicky scared selfish thoughtless upset worried Good amused brave calm cheerful cooperative determined enthusiastic excited fair fantastic fine friendly funny Good good happy healthy helpful jolly kind proud relieved smiling successful thoughtful victorious wonderful

15 Hot seating – example questions
How long has it been going on? Have you done anything about it? How does it make you feel? Why do you think they are treating you this way? How often does it happen? Have you spoken to anyone? What would you like to happen?

16 Class feedback How did you feel playing the different roles?
How was it imagining and acting out the feelings? What made some more difficult than others? Were you surprised by how you felt in any of the roles?

17 Change behaviour If people empathised, do you think any of these behaviours would change and why? Spreading rumours on MSN Calling people names Robbery Vandalising someone’s property Racism Bullying someone because they are ‘different’

18 Take a walk in my shoes

19 Human rights The freedoms that you enjoy are all human rights!
Human rights are the basic freedoms and rights that belong to every human being!

20 Respecting difference
With freedom and diversity comes a need to respect difference! Do you want to live in a world where we can be who we want to be, listen to the music we like, eat the foods we enjoy, dress how we like to dress etc? Then we must remember that the person next to us has the freedom and right to do the same. And they are likely to be different...

21 Be proud It is important to remember we are ALL different and it is our differences that make us unique and special, and that makes our country interesting. Be proud and confident in your differences! Respect and celebrate difference in others!

22 Reach your potential Human rights help to ensure every human being has the freedom to grow to their potential. When everyone’s human rights are protected and balanced, it helps everyone to get along. At school we respect every student’s human rights and believe in helping every student to achieve their potential. It’s important to always try your best at school and to respect each other so you can help to create a positive learning environment where everyone has an equal chance to reach their potential!

23 Freedom to be... Freedom gives us the power or right to act, speak, or think as we want! It allows us to be individuals and to be who we want to be!

24 Diversity... When we have freedom to live and be who we want to be, it results in an interesting mix of people. Diversity is a mix of things...

25 Which is more interesting?
World without diversity World with diversity

26 Be proud It is important to remember we are ALL different and it is our differences that make us unique and special, and that makes our country interesting. Be proud and confident in your differences! Respect and celebrate difference in others!

27 Celebrate difference This week observe differences and diversity in people. Different ways people dress, act, eat, think, speak etc. Then celebrate their differences and think about how it makes them unique and special and adds to our diverse and interesting culture!

28 HUMAN RIGHTS For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. Nelson Mandela
