Strong organization of information is important – use a graphic organizer! Each paragraph brings the reader deeper into the subject by providing new information. An expository essay has a specific formula as to what should appear in each paragraph.

5 1st Paragraph (Introduction)
Begins with a good hook to draw your reader in. States the topic. Provides a preview of the three body paragraphs. Concludes with a transition sentence that leads into the next paragraph.

6 2nd, 3rd, 4th Paragraphs (Body)
Each paragraph has its own topic related to the main idea of the essay. Use 1 or 2 pieces of text-based evidence to support your topic– do not repeat yourself. Each paragraph needs introductory and concluding sentences.

7 5th Paragraph (Closing)
Restate your topic from the introduction, but in DIFFERENT WORDS. Summarize the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th paragraphs. End with a “zinger” that makes the reader think or smile.
