Aims/objectives To understand the importance of communication and working with others effectively within the workplace To understand the difference between assertive, aggressive and passive behaviour and how our behaviour can affect our relationships

3 Scenario 1 You are in class and some other students are talking very loudly and laughing. You can’t hear the tutor properly and you are starting to feel cross

4 You can choose to respond in one of 3 ways You can respond 1
You can choose to respond in one of 3 ways You can respond 1.ASSERTIVELY or You can respond AGGRESSIVELY or You can respond PASSIVELY

5 How would you respond to this type of situation: Response 1: Gain eye contact , smile sweetly and say very politely “please could you be a little quieter because I can’t hear what the tutor is saying”

6 Or…. Response 2: Get angry and say loudly…. SHUT UP
Or….. Response 2: Get angry and say loudly….SHUT UP! Insert a picture of an angry person

7 Or…..response 3: Try and ignore the racket they are making even though it would interfere with your learning

A passive response To each of the following scenarios:

9 Scenario 2 Your colleague in work is annoying you asking you to help him with his duties. They know that you are already finding it difficult to complete your own tasks before the end of your shift. What would you say to them ?

10 Scenario 3 You’re being bullied at college and a few of your classmates keep calling you names. You are worried and afraid. What would you do about this situation?

11 Scenario 4 A friend has borrowed £30 from you. It was 4 weeks ago and you really need it back. What would you do?

12 Scenario 5 Three of your close friends have gone to the cinema without asking you. You feel very left out and quite down! What would you do?

13 Scenario 6 A colleague at work keeps going into your tool kit and borrowing tools without your permission. You are getting annoyed because he often never returns things that he has borrowed. What would you do?

Behaviour: Blaming Threatening Fighting Stand up for your rights but in unhelpful ways Feelings Anger Frustration Bitterness Guilt

The Outcomes of responding in a aggressive manner: I am more important than you Domination Humiliation Win at the expense of others Force others to lose

18 What is Passiveness Behaviour: Be apologetic
Give up your right by not being honest Do what you’re told regardless of how you feel Outcome/outcomes Don’t get what you want Anger builds up Rights violated Loneliness and isolation

Passive You are more important than me Feelings Helpless Anxious Resentful Disappointment

20 Good Communication Know what you want to say Make good eye contact
Listen to the other persons opinions and views Have a clear, firm voice Say no and don’t make excuses Use clear body language Say what you want Repeat what you want Suggest reasonable alternatives

21 Key Messages You can choose to behave assertively, aggressively or passively towards others Assertive behaviour is the most proactive type and achieves the most positive outcome/outcomes
