COMMUNICATION SKILLS EQ: What are the 3 types of communication styles? Do Now: Write down an example of a time you had a misunderstanding with one or more people.

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? Communication is a process through which two or more people exchange information. If the message is not properly sent, or the message is unclear, misunderstandings can arise.

BENEFITS OF GOOD COMMUNICATION Preventing Misunderstandings – Miscommunication is easy, and can have negative effects such as arguments and hurt feelings. Building Healthy Relationships – If you are mean or insult others they won’t want to be around you. But if you let people know how important they are to you, they are more likely to want to be around you. Expressing Yourself – Important for letting others know how you feel, and what you want.

COMMUNICATION STYLES Passive - Does not offer opposition when challenged or pressured Aggressive – To be hostile and unfriendly in the way one expresses oneself. Assertive – Express oneself in a direct, respectful way.

COMMUNICATION STYLES - ASSERTIVE RESPONSE Someone cuts in front of you in line, which one is an assertive response? You don’t say anything. ‘WOW!!! YOU MUST THINK YOU ARE SO SPECIAL!!’ ‘Excuse me, but I think I was the next person in line.’

EMPATHY Empathy is the ability to understand another person’s feelings. You ask a friend to borrow their bike, however they need their bike to deliver newspapers. You respond by telling them, ‘You can deliver the newspapers when I am done with it.’ Is that showing empathy? Why or why not?

LISTENING SKILLS Active Listening is letting the speaker know you are listening and clarifying anything that is confusing.

LISTENING DO’S AND DON’TS Do’s Maintain eye contact Lean forward and face the speaker Ask questions Nod your head Paraphrase the speaker Don’t’s Don’t interrupt or change the subject Don’t look at your watch Don’t tap your foot Don’t think about something else Don’t watch TV

BODY LANGUAGE Body Language is communicating without saying a word. Facial expressions, gestures, and posture.

I-MESSAGES I-messages are a great way to communicate assertively. Expresses the way you feel while being firm and polite. ‘I cannot study for my test because the music is too loud, can you please turn it down.’ VS. ‘You are so inconsiderate, you are going to make me fail my test. The music you are playing is so loud!!’
