1 Third Grade Mrs. Veravanich

2 A little about me Started teaching in LAUSD in Third Grade
You pronounce my name: Mrs. Vehr-UH-vanich Started teaching in LAUSD in Third Grade Taught in SVUSD while I got my Masters Became a vice principal before I became a new mom Took three years off to stay home with my little ones When I returned to work, I worked part time, one day a week, at many schools throughout the district When I returned Full time, I joined de Portola teaching Third Grade Taught Kindergarten for the last two years Last year I coached a group of our de Portola 6th graders after school, and WE WON the OCDE Academic Pentathlon!!!!! I love teaching children and learning from them as well

3 Things to Expect this year
PE every day this year (an experiment that is working for us!) Fridays, please look for your child’s “mail” and take all papers out of the binder on Friday Eat our snacks inside together during teacher read aloud Water bottles daily works well if you need to contact me Book Orders help our class earn books! The online link on my website should make it easier. This month, we earned 20 free books for our library, and this means I get to update our books for each new group of kids.

4 The Importance of Reading
Children should read or be read to minutes a night

5 Reading Counts Points and/or Book reports
15 Reading Counts Points Due by November 18th This is roughly 1 book per month Children may take Reading Counts test any week they are done. We go to the computer lab weekly. If a child chooses a book that is not on the Reading Counts list, he/she may ask to do a Book Report in place of a Reading Counts test. Book Reports give a child 5 Reading Counts points. Book reports are not required. If you choose the Book Report instead of the Reading Counts test, parent and teacher have to approve the book and the option

6 Star of the Week Each child will be a STAR for one week
Please find your child’s Number and mark which week your child will be STAR Monday – bring a poster Tuesday – Bring or tell about your favorite book Wednesday – Tell us about your hobbies Thursday – Tell us a story about your best day ever Friday – Free Choice, bring something you would like to share with us

7 How I start the year

8 How Homework Will Work Nightly homework written on the puppy dog sheet (*Please find that) Spelling homework description on the top of each list we send home Math Homework Book should stay in backpacks Binder should stay in backpacks Before you leave in the morning, you might ask, “Is your binder and math homework book in your backpack?” If homework is not done, grades will be affected quickly. Full credit is given for trying (10/10), and a “0” is given for missing assignments. If a child takes a homework alert, has you sign it, and turns in the work late, partial credit will be given (7/10). No notes will be accepted. Homework is excused when child is absent.
