Presentation on theme: "(If you haven’t already) Answer the following questions:"— Presentation transcript:

1 (If you haven’t already) Answer the following questions:
What do you know about Nick? What do you think about him as a narrator? What do you know about the Buchanan’s? Based upon what you know, what might happen later in the story? Based on what you’ve heard about Gatsby, what kind of person do you think he is? What qualities might he have? How do you see the American Dream in the novel so far?

2 The first chapter of a novel often introduces some of the major themes of the work. Write a paragraph (4-6 complete sentences) in which you explore some of the possible themes of The Great Gatsby based off of what you have already read. Use textual evidence.

3 Found Poetry Theme: main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly. Tone: an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is generally conveyed through the choice of words or the viewpoint of a writer on a particular subject. Imagery: to use figurative language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. Mood: a literary element that evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and descriptions. Identify poetic/musical quotes in the first two chapters of the text that also work to establish theme, tone, mood, or imagery (write them down) After you have found them, cut your paper into strips (one strip for each quote) Then, create a poem based upon the quotes that you have found – it may not be the most eloquent poem ever written, and it will likely not rhyme, but try to come up with some meaning for your poem. Glue your strips down on the construction paper to make your FOUND poem (these are going to hang on the wall for everyone to read!)

4 Add to your map based upon the information learned in Chapter 2 When you finish with all of this, read Ch 3
