Henry the Navigator – patron of exploration, gathered shipbuilders, cartographers, and ship captains to sail to Africa and India (gold and spices)
Dias – Cape of Good Hope
Vasco Da Gama – reached India established the spice trade
Cabral – accidental claim

7. Spanish Exploration
Christopher Columbus convinced Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain that he could reach Asia by sailing west
Educated already knew Earth was round but

Does not discover the Americas but does create a connection between East and West that never existed

8. Treaty of Tordesillas
Imaginary line drawn to settle dispute between Spain and Portugal
All unexplored land west of the line belongs to Spain, all land east belongs to Portugal
Modification from earlier decision made by the Pope

9. Amerigo Vespucci
Florentine explorer who figured out they were in a “New World”
Amerigo = America (namesake)

10. Spanish Exploration (Continued) Ferdinand Magellan – first voyage to circumnavigate, or sail around, the world. (sort of)

11. Northwest Passage
Various countries including England and France searched for a passage through the Americas to access the goods of Asia
