3 Political Crisis & Revolt
Rumors & the “Great Fear” Food shortages and tales of attacks by soldiers become common in the countryside Peasants angered by the “Great Fear” attack nobles and steal grain. Attacks are short lived Turmoil in Paris Different factions compete for influence Moderates = National Guard create Tricolor Radicals = Paris Commune replace government

4 National Assembly Acts
Due to Peasant uprisings & the Storming of the Bastille, the National Assembly acts quickly Nobles in the assembly give up all their special privileges. Hunting Rights, No Taxes, Special Status, etc. “Feudalism is Abolished” National Assembly August 4th 2 AM

5 Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen
As a step toward a new constitution the Assembly issued the Declaration. Was modeled after the US Declaration All men are born free, have natural rights, and are equal before the law Grant universal male suffrage (right to vote) It was reflected in the logan “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”

6 The Women get Involved Olympe de Gouges creates Declaration of the Rights of Women Other declaration only applied to men Never excepted she is imprisoned & executed Women’s March on Versailles 6,000 women of Paris march to the palace demanding bread & to see the king Much of their anger is directed at the Queen Marie Antoinette She became a symbol of all the problems created by the nobility

7 Results of the March Royal guards are killed and decapitated.
The Royal Family is forced to return to Paris. Muskets, Cannons, and other weapons are seized.

8 Changes in the Government
The Church is put under state control Church property is seized Church officials are now elected Angers peasants splits revolution Constitution of 1791 Fulfills the Assemblies Tennis Court Oath Establishes a Limited Monarchy Forms the Legislative Assembly Moderates consider the Revolution over

9 Louis Goes on the Run Louis and his family try to flee to Marie Antoinette’s native Austria Captured near the Austrian border Louis is now considered a traitor to the Revolution Allows radicals to seize control of the Revolution

10 Foreign Leaders React Foreign leaders seal borders to prevent spread of the “French Plague” French Emigres report actions taken against the church & nobility They expect the Revolution to get more violent After Louis failed to escape and is imprisoned Prussia & Austria vow to protect the French Monarchy Radicals prepare for war

11 The Radicals in Control
Radicals in the Legislative Assembly (middle class Jacobins & working class Sans-culottes) gain power. They push to end the monarchy and establish a republic. They use newspapers & pamphlets to sway public opinion to their views They declare war on the other European Monarchs
