2 Create a Name Tag for Yourself
Fold your paper “hotdog style” Write your name on the front and back What you want to be called if it is different than your roster name Include personal and “professional” or academic details about yourself Display on your desk when finished 8/16-8/18 We Will examine the reading syllabus and identify classroom expectations. I will complete the All About Me/ All About Them graphic organizer and compose a “Finger Print” poem. Materials: Class syllabus, All About Me page, “Finger Print” poem, TEKS: Figure 19 a and b WICOR – Students write in All about ME and final poem, Students must ask questions of each other to complete the organizer, students use a All About me for their pre-writing and as a brainstorm for their poem. students will read and analyze the sample poem to use as a model for their own writing.

4 Overview In this required course students will read and understand a wide variety of literary and informational texts, helping them to acquire critical vocabulary and analyze the literary elements of Plot, Character, Setting, Theme, Style, Tone, Point of View, as well as other new elements. The writing component focuses on literary analysis, with an emphasis on organization, structure, thesis statement development, and sufficient evidence to support thesis. Regular vocabulary study is required. The standards are cumulative--students will continue to address earlier standards as needed while they attend to standards for their grade. In English II, students will engage in activities that build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen their reading, writing, and oral language skills. Students will read and write on a daily basis.

5 What We will Do Students will read and analyze a variety of texts across genres of literature and interact with texts in a variety of ways including text annotations and Short Answer Response questions Students will use elements of the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) to compose texts Students will be expected to participate in class discussions and group activities on a regular basis. Students will apply prior knowledge and skills in order to gain new in a variety of reading and writing applications.

7 Beginning of Class Procedures:
Come in to Class Quietly Sit in your assigned seat Place all backpacks on the BACK of your chair. Backpacks should not be on your back, in your lap, on the floor, on your table or in the walkway during class. Place any homework in the turn in bin before class begins. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON IT! Begin your warm-up. You will have between five and ten minutes to complete. Check the daily schedule for any materials that you may need for class and have them on your desk before class begins. YOU WILL ALWAYS need a pencil.

8 End of Class Procedures:
Clean up your area. Put books and other supplies away NEATLY and where they belong. Throw trash or paper scraps away. Remain seated. DO NOT line up at the door or leave until I have dismissed you.

9 Evaluation 50% Homework and class participation
50% Quizzes MC tests, SAR, and Process Pieces are graded according to the SAR, and EOC Writing Rubric Components consist of: Participation in class discussions Completion of homework, and in class assignments Individual parts of the Process Pieces, Thesis, Claims, Evidence, Short Answer Response Questions. Components consist of: Quizzes and test on reading selections Short Answer Response Questions Literary Analysis Process Pieces Use of 1st and 2nd person pronouns on final Draft pieces will result in a failing grade (65%) on that piece

10 Crull Bucks You will earn Crull Bucks for Good behavior Grades
Six weeks grades – the higher your grade the more $$ Exceptional Class Progress You may use your Crull Bucks in the Class Store to “purchase” supplies or a snack

11 All About Me Using the All About me Page as a guide
Fill in information about YOU! You must have something in every section! You may use color and pen on this assignment Begin Wednesday – Finish Thursday

12 Its all About Them! Using the back of your page interview 13 of your class mates That means a different person for each section Make sure you write their name in the section as well Each person in class will share one thing about themselves and about one other person in class Be sure to listen – you can not share something about someone else that has already been shared Supplies: Vocabulary packet, Genre list, text device.

13 Create a Fingerprint Poem about The Story of Your Life
Everyone has a story to tell in their life. What is yours? You are going to create a one page Fingerprint poem This assignment will let us know about you and what is important in your story. What is your Theme? Thursday in class

14 Poem Requirements Choose one of the Fingerprints
Read through the Ideas for Writing – the only requirement is you write about yourself. You may use your “All about me” page as a brainstorm Use color Get creative Present Poem IF you do not finish This is Homework! DUE First thing Friday

15 Library Friday 8th period
To pick up Text books for class Friday

16 Tone Analysis Listen to the theme music from various television programs. You do not have to name the program. But if you know it write it down. DON’T SAY IT! What type of television program? Drama, Comedy, Mystery, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Children's Program, Family Show, Other? How do you know? What happens in the music to help you identify the type of program? How would you describe the tone? (Choose from the list of tone words or use your own.) Why did you choose those words? Friday
