2. Team Expectations It all starts with commitment
Players expected to be at all practices and games
If player will be absent from practice this must be communicated to the coach at least 24 hours before practice
Practices are at least 2 times each week for a minimum of 1 ½ hours
Playing time at every level is dependent on effort in practice

3. Team Expectations
Attendance and effort at every practice are critical for both the individual and the team
At any level it is unrealistic to give significant playing time to a player who does not attend practice or is at practice but is being detrimental to the team by not listening or being disruptive

4. Practices We will practice an entire grade at the same time
Practices focus on individual skill and generally only limited scrimmaging
Practices tend to be significantly more intense than school or recreational practices
Practices require significant physicality and attention to detail

5. Coaches Coaching is done by parents and community volunteers
Be respectful of the time commitment that they are making

6. Cost
Fall League: $25
League Season October 8th-November 12th
Saturday mornings at the High School
1st-6th Grades Only
Tournament Team: $50 player fee plus $50 refundable volunteer fee per family

7. Philosophy
The Shawano Hoops Club has different philosophies at various grade levels
Generally, we work at basic skill levels in 2nd grade and by 8th grade are working on more advanced skills
No cuts will be made at any level

8. 2nd Grade Philosophy Emphasis: Individual and team skill development
This level is to develop both a love for the game and introduce the basic skills needed to play it well.
Basic offensive and defensive concepts are introduced at this level

9. 2nd Grade Philosophy
Playing time: Nearly equal depending upon practice attendance and effort
Teams: If more than one team is needed, player talent will be divided equally among teams

10. 3rd Grade Philosophy
Emphasis: Individual and team skills. This level is to continue the development of the skills introduced the previous year(2nd Grade)
Basic offensive and defensive fundamentals are taught and run
Some advanced concepts may be introduced

11. 3rd Grade Philosophy
Playing Time: Nearly equal depending upon practice attendance and effort
Teams: If more than one team is needed player talent will be divided equally among teams.

12. 4th Grade Philosophy Emphasis: Individual and team skill development
This level is to continue the development of skills and concepts learned in the previous years (2nd and 3rd Grade)
Advanced concepts will be introduced

13. 4th Grade Philosophy
Playing time: Nearly equal depending upon practice attendance and effort
Teams: If more than one team is needed, player talent will be divided equally among teams

14. 5th Grade Philosophy Emphasis: Individual and team skill development
This level is to continue the development of skills and concepts learned in the previous years (2nd-4th Grade)
Advanced concepts will continue to be taught with some more additions
As the season progresses we will also incorporate a more competitive perspective

15. 5th Grade Philosophy
Playing time: Nearly equal depending on practice attendance, effort, and skill
Every player will have some extended playing time in each half
Teams: If more than one team is needed, player talent will be divided equally among teams.

16. 6th Grade Philosophy Emphasis: Individual and team skill development
This level is to continue the development of skills and concepts learned in the previous years (2nd-5th Grade)
Basic/Advanced concepts will continue to be taught and improved upon from the previous year
As the season progresses we will also incorporate a more competitive perspective

17. 6th Grade Philosophy
Playing time: Nearly equal depending on practice attendance, effort, and skill
Every player will have some playing time in each half
Skill becomes a more significant factor but not an overriding factor in playing time
Teams: If more than one team is needed, player talent will be divided equally among teams.
The “A” team may have a couple additional tournaments

18. 7th Grade Philosophy Emphasis: Individual/Team skills and competition.
We pay much more attention to fundamental skills at this level
Every player should be able to dribble, pass, and shoot
We want to teach the players how to be competitive and how to maximize their skills

19. 7th Grade Philosophy
Playing Time: Playing time depends on practice attendance, effort, and skill
Skill is a more significant factor in playing time
Teams: If more than one team is needed player talent will be divided equally among teams
The “A” team may have a couple of additional tournaments

20. 8th Grade Philosophy Emphasis: Individual/Team skills and competition
We pay even more attention to fundamental skills
This is the most competitive level
Every player should understand all basic skills and be able to run some advanced offensive and defensive concepts
This is the last year before high school tryouts
It is important that the kids understand this fact

21. 8th Grade Philosophy
Playing Time: Playing time depends on practice attendance, effort, dedication, and skill
Skill is a more significant factor in playing time
Teams: If more than one team is needed player talent will be divided equally among teams
The “A” team may have a couple of additional tournaments

22. State Tournament Team
Throughout the tournament team season, players at each grade level will be observed and evaluated for selection of a WSICT team
Starting at the 5th grade level
If a grade level has more than 1 team the coaches may elect to have the group of players going to State play together in a tournament or two leading up to this tournament
Not all coaches will choose to go to this tournament

23. Hoops Club Expectations of Players
Come to practice and games on time
Be respectful of your parents, coaches, teammates, opponents, and officials
Be respectful of our facilities
If you are unable to practice, call a coach well before practice time
Do not communicate through teammates
Call the coach directly
Communicate any problems or concerns in a respectful manner

24. Hoops Club Expectations of Parents
Assist your children in meeting expectations
Be respectful of the team, coaches, officials, and opponents
If you have concerns raise them early in a respectful manner
You may not agree with a coach but you need to listen and help your child earn a larger role on the team

25. Hoops Club Expectations of Parents
Use the 24 Hour Rule
Do not confront a coach during or right after a tournament
Wait to discuss any issues until players aren’t around
Be sportsmanlike in the stands
Do not yell at officials, the team, or their opponent
Cheer in a positive manner

Volunteer as required and as needed
Get the fees in on time
Make sure that your child is physically fit to play
Support your team
Be sure uniforms are turned in on time

Abide strictly by the Shawano Hoops Club’s Guidelines
Learn the game and teach all your players
Model good sportsmanship, work ethic, and respect
Be respectful of players, parents, opponents, and officials
Be prepared for practices and games

Communicate with players and parents
Encourage leadership, sportsmanship, and good judgment

29. Final Thought
Player playing time will not be equal but it will be based on philosophies listed for each grade
Because of the cost involved for families it is imperative that this privilege has been earned
The level of competition that is seen with Hoops Club is a much higher level than during the school season and the athletes should be able to demonstrate that they are able to compete at this higher level
