Government is an organisation of people set up to protect the community and make rules.

are there? Four common types are: Monarchy Dictatorship Democracy Theocracy

11 Democracy In a democracy, the government is elected by the people. Everyone who is eligible to vote has a chance to have their say over who runs the country. It is distinct from governments controlled by a particular social class or group A democracy is determined either directly or through elected representatives.

12 Direct Democracy People vote directly on every issue
Only practical in a small community

People are represented by elected officials Used in large countries Also known as a Republic government

14 Monarchy Power is in the hands of a king, queen, emperor or empress.
The ruling position can be passed on to the ruler’s heirs. In some traditional monarchies, the monarch has absolute power. But a constitutional monarchy, like the UK, also has a democratic government that limits the monarch's control.

15 Dictatorship A country ruled by a single leader. The leader has not been elected and may use force to keep control. In a military dictatorship, the army is in control.

16 Theocracy Governmental rulers are identical with the leaders of the dominant religion Governmental policies are either identical with or strongly influenced by the principles of the majority religion. Government claims to rule on behalf of God or a higher power

In the first century AD, the Greeks recognized three types of government: monarchy, aristocracy, and anarchy. The Jews at the time did not fit into any of these categories as they believed only God and his laws were sovereign.

In 450 B.C. this civilization assembled and all citizens voted on laws. A council of 500 prepared business for the assembly.

The Nazi Party took over every aspect of this country’s social, economic and political life. Hitler quickly secured his power by burning down a legislative building and used the incident to obtain emergency powers, becoming an absolute ruler.

27 Activities and Instructions: For all tasks: You may use a dictionary and you may also research using your computer. Task 1: Glossary 1) Copy the following words into the glossary section of your ENH books. 2) Write definitions for each of the following words: democracy, government, monarchy freedom, dictatorship, sovereign rights, responsibilities, representative officials, order, laws, theocracy,

28 Task 2: Thinking about government:
1) List three laws that are designed by the government to help keep people in Australian society safe. 2) List at least four advantages and disadvantages of each of the three laws you have chosen.

29 Task 3: Sharing ideas: 1) Imagine that you are the supreme authority (dictator) in this classroom. 2) List five rules that you think should be followed by all students and teachers. Be creative, but none of these rules should in any way be harmful or disrespectful. 3) Swap your rules with others on your table group. Each person on your table group should write one advantage and one disadvantage for each of your rules.

30 Task 4: Persuading others:
1) You are required to write a speech to convince your class to elect you president of the group. 2) Write a persuasive speech that lists examples of what you can do for the class. You may use visuals to help persuade your audience. 3) The speech should be at least 150 words long. Your speech needs to be at least three paragraphs long.

31 Task 5: Research, information sharing, and Cornell Notes:
1) Review the different types of government that were studied in this PowerPoint presentation. 2) Choose one of the types of government (either from your own research or taken from this presentation). You should write down the features of this type of government, any famous examples of countries/rulers and the impact on the population (both good and bad) of this type of government. 3) During teacher-directed class discussion, share with the class what you discovered in your research. 4) Fill in the Cornell Notes Activity Sheets that are provided by your teacher as you listen to the class contributions. You should have at least three Cornell Notes completed by the end of the class discussions. You are required to complete three Cornell Notes on three types of government using the information that is shared in the class discussions. *Do not forget to write down any questions that you think of.
