1 Problem Solving Assembly

2 Who is the cleverest?

3 Grumpy Bear and Grizzly Bear
Once upon a time there were two brothers called Grizzly Bear and Grumpy Bear. They were the best of friends and always played together.

4 Grumpy and Grizzly were old enough to go hunting with their parents but they first had to show they were ready. Each bear had to climb the Great Honey Tree to show they were strong enough to go hunting. So one day Mother bear took Grizzly and Grumpy to climb the tree.

5

6 “It is time for you to climb the tree, my dears,” she said
“It is time for you to climb the tree, my dears,” she said. “Be careful as it is not easy!” “Let me go first!” shouted Grumpy, “I can do that it’s easy!” He jumped up at the tree but his little legs weren’t strong enough. Mother bear stepped forward to help him. “Get off me mother!” he snapped. “I don’t need your help, I can do it!” But Grumpy did not know how to climb the tree. He couldn’t even make it past the first branch. “This tree is too big!” he grumbled. “It’s impossible for me to climb!”. He jumped down and sat in a huff at the bottom of the tree.

9 Then Grizzly had a go. “Gosh, this is really hard
Then Grizzly had a go. “Gosh, this is really hard!” he said as he struggled to hang on. “I did say it would be hard” said his mother. “I need to practise climbing trees mother! Then I’ll get better.” “Good idea, Grizzly” replied mother bear. Grumpy didn’t think that was a good idea as he just wanted to get to the top of the tree!

10

11 The next day, Grizzly took Grumpy to practise climbing trees
The next day, Grizzly took Grumpy to practise climbing trees. “I don’t need to practise,” boasted Grumpy. “I could have easily climbed the Great Honey Tree if my leg wasn’t hurting yesterday!” “I didn’t know you had a bad leg?” said Grizzly. “Yeh I hurt it on the rocks – that’s why I couldn’t climb.” So Grumpy sat and sunbathed in the sun while Grizzly climbed tree after tree after tree. His arms were sore. His legs were sore. His paws were saw. He was very tired when they went home.

12

13 The next morning mother bear woke Grizzly and Grumpy
The next morning mother bear woke Grizzly and Grumpy. “I want you to try to climb the Great Honey Tree today my dears. If you want to go hunting with the grown ups you must be able to climb the tree,” said mother bear. So off they went to the Great Honey Tree.

14

15 As they got there Grumpy Bear raced towards the tree and leapt at it
As they got there Grumpy Bear raced towards the tree and leapt at it. “Race you to the top Grizzly!” he called. Before Grizzly could reach him, Grumpy had tried to shuffle up higher but he lost his grip and fell with a thud to the floor. “This is stupid!” he cried, sobbing. “I can’t do it. I’ll never be a hunter.” “Don’t be sad,” said Grizzly as he hugged Grumpy, “You will be able to climb the tree one day… you just need to be stronger.” “I’ll never be strong,” moaned Grumpy Bear, “I’m not good at climbing,” and he ran home.

16

17

18 Grizzly didn’t like to see Grumpy upset
Grizzly didn’t like to see Grumpy upset. He walked back up to the tree and looked up at the very top. “I can climb this” he thought to himself. He jumped up and shuffled as high as he could go. Mother bear watched. “Look Mother,” he shouted, “Its not very high but I have got higher than I did when I first tried!” “So you have Grizzly,” said his mother. “I can tell you have been practising.”

19

20 When Grizzly got home he found Grumpy
When Grizzly got home he found Grumpy. “Come on Grumpy I’ve got a great idea!” he said, “Let’s go and ask one of the grown ups how to climb!” “They won’t be able to help me,” said Grumpy, “My arms are too short for climbing.” “Don’t be daft, Grumpy!” laughed Grizzly, “They’re the same size as my arms! You just need to make them stronger!” But Grumpy didn’t want to go. So Grizzly went off to find the grown ups to get some tips.

21

22 He found Big Ben. “Hi Big Ben, I’m trying to climb the Great Honey Tree but I’m finding it really difficult. Can you help me?” “Hello, Grizzly. Of course! It is a challenge. It took me a few times before I could climb it when I was your age!” he said. “the trick is to use the branches. Let me show you…” So Big Ben showed Grizzly how to use the branches to step up the tree.

23

24

25 The next day, mother bear took grizzly and Grumpy back to the Great Honey Tree. “I can’t wait to try it again!” smiled Grizzly, “Big Ben showed me what to do!” “I’m glad you’re excited about it Grizzly, “ said Mother. “What about you, Grumpy?” “I don’t feel well.” muttered Grumpy. At the tree, Grizzly did really well and climbed even higher than before. He used the branches like Big Ben had taught him. “Well done Grizzly,” called his mother. “You’ve tried really hard!” “Are you going to have a go Grumpy?” “Not today, I have a tummy ache mother,” he said.

26

27 The next day, Grizzly got up really early and went to practise climbing trees. After a while he ran back home shouting “mother! Mother! I’ve found a really good way to climb the tree!” “Have you really?” she smiled. “I need to use my claws! And sometimes I can use my teeth as well!” he said proudly. Grizzly felt really pleased with himself for discovering this new idea. “Can we go to the Great Honey Tree today please? I’m going to try to get to the very top!”

28

29 So Grizzly, Grumpy and Mother Bear went to the Great Honey Tree
So Grizzly, Grumpy and Mother Bear went to the Great Honey Tree. “Are you going to have a go Grumpy?” she asked. “Leave me alone Mother… I’ll never be able to do it!” he cried and sat down in a sulk.

32 Grizzly on the other hand couldn’t wait to try… he ran up to the tree and shuffled from branch to branch, higher and higher he went, using his claws and teeth he shuffled higher higher higher…

“I did it!!!!!!” He yelled! “Yippppeeeee! I did it!” He felt very proud of himself. His legs hurt, his paws ached and he felt dizzy but he had done it! After he had shuffled down to the ground, mother bear was waiting to meet him. She gave him a huge bear hug. “I’m so proud of you Grizzly. It wasn’t an easy challenge but you kept at it, practised and tried your hardest. You are now ready to go hunting with me and the grown ups”. “I can’t wait!” he grinned.

39

40 The next day, Grizzly and Mother Bear joined the grown ups to go hunting. Grizzly Bear was worried about hunting as he didn’t know what to do, but he knew if he practised and never gave up he would soon get the hang of it. Poor Grumpy was left at home all alone as he watched Grizzly go off to hunt. He wished he had tried harder.
