Not all South Carolinians, or even all American colonist agreed that the colonies should be independent from Great Britain. This caused a great divide among colonist. Those who strongly supported American rights & were willing to fight for them if necessary were called Patriots, partisans or rebels.

Those who remained loyal to Britain & the king were called Loyalist or Tories. British soldiers were called redcoats. Official American troops authorized by the Continental Congress were called Continentals. Most of the Patriot troops in SC were militia- local fighters/volunteers not directly under the Continental Army.

Many from the backcountry were loyalist/tories; although, many in the backcountry had no allegiance to either the king or to the principles of democracy. These people were considered neutralist. Lowcountry Patriots & backcountry loyalist fought each other in the war. When the war ended, many loyalist left SC (Caribbean or Canada). Others were fined or run out of town.

Page 58 Women's Role in the War

SC's influential men, during the war, were wealthy white men who were Lowcountry landowners. Most were Patriots—those who supported the Continental Congress & independence. They helped create a provisional (temporary) government to control the colony during the war.

SC women were patriots, loyalist and some wished to not be involved in the war. Women managed farms & plantations when the men were away fighting. Some served as nurses or messengers in the war. Many women sacrificed their homes & fortunes to the cause. Women hoped that the revolution would result in the inclusion of women in the democracy of the land.

Page 59 African & Native Americans

African Americans in SC continued to work as slaves throughout the war, although some served as soldiers in the Continental Army & fought with the partisan bands. SC feared a slave uprising so at first they rejected the Continental Congress’s appeal to allow slaves to serve in non-military jobs for the army such as cooking. When more manpower was needed, the law was changed to allow one third of the militia to be made up of slaves.

Native Americans involvement in the war: At first, many tribes avoided war. After being attacked on the frontier, Native Americans retaliated. Many supported the British because the British promised to return control of the west to them. The Cherokees supported the British and attacked colonists.
