3 Needs NEEDS – a lack of something required or desired. Needs motivate us to act! Abraham Maslow defined a Hierarchy of Human Needs Lower needs must be met first

6 Physiological Needs Necessary for life Food, water, oxygen, sleep Protection from extreme temperatures Elimination Sensory Needs  Hearing, seeing, feeling, tasting, mental stimulation Motor Needs  If muscles aren't stimulated, they will atrophy

7 Safety/Security The need to be free from anxiety and fear Secure in the environment Order and routine

8 Love and Affection Social acceptance Friendship To be loved Need to belong and relate to others Sexuality  feelings/attitudes toward a person's own masculine/feminine nature  Ability to give and receive love and affection  Reproductive capabilities

9 Esteem Feeling important and worthwhile Respect, approval and appreciation Engagement in activities that bring achievement, success and recognition Growth of self-confidence

10 Self-Actualization Obtaining our full potential Becoming confident, eager to express beliefs Willing to reach out to others to help them

11 How do we meet our needs? Direct methods Hard work Setting realistic goals Cooperation Evaluating what works or doesn't work effectively

12 How do we meet our needs? Indirect methods (Defense Mechanisms) Unhealthy when used too often, but sometimes allows us to cope!  Suppression Keeps information out of conscious awareness  Denial Refusal to accept reality

13 Indirect methods (Defense Mechanisms)  Projection Projecting your thoughts, feelings, and/or emotions onto someone/something else  Rationalization Making excuses

14 Defense Mechanisms (cont) Withdrawal Withdrawal is a more severe form of defense. It entails removing yourself from events, stimuli, interactions, etc… that could remind you of painful thoughts and feelings.

16 Stress Reactions Develop when defense mechanisms are inadequate  Chronic complaining and demanding behavior  Agitation with manipulative behavior  Restlessness  Sleeplessness  Depression  Withdrawl

17 Challenges Meet patient's needs to the best of your ability Set standards of excellence for yourself Let your conscience be your guide

18 Responsibilities Take advantage of every opportunity to learn and develop skills Set standards for your performance  Is 70 % good enough?  Establish good study habits  Relate learning to past experiences  Measure each achievement in terms of progress toward your career goal Be honest with yourself and take responsibility for your actions
