Peace Day Activities Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots invites R&S groups to participate in Peace Day September 21

She imagines a time when the solidarity, hopes and ideas of R&S groups will circle the globe with a shared vision for a peaceful future. Dr Jane is a UN Messenger of Peace.

How could you participate? R&S Groups around the world will be celebrating Peace Day

Cook for Peace How about cooking and sharing meals of different cultures and backgrounds – maybe eating indigenous foods? While cooking and eating the food, share stories of its ingredients, family history, cultural significance, etc.

Performing a Living Tree The idea for this activity is to encourage your group to become a tree. Members of your group will be united as a living thing as they take on the roles of the parts of a tree. Step 1: Divide into five groups. Each group will represent a part of the tree. Step 2: Build your tree from the roots up by arranging your group members: roots – trunk – branches – leaves – flowers. Step 3: Then pollinators visit the flowers and those flowers become fruit. Step 4: The fruit falls and they become the new tree. Step 5: Act out the process as many times as you wish. It is a lot of fun and you will see all plants from a new perspective!

Discussing Peace Quotes Students come together and share what the word “peace” means to them using their own definitions or sharing their favorite peace quotes. Discuss what the ideas and quotes mean to you and what can be done to achieve this kind of peace in the world. You could also reflect on what efforts have already been made in the past.

This activity opens people’s hearts to the beauty and diversity around them. Create a safe space for your interviews and prepare your questions carefully. In order to have a record, you could videotape peoples’ stories (with their permission) or create a real or virtual scrapbook. http://www.rootsandshoots.org/sites/default/files/RSPeaceDay-HumanLibrary.pdf
