1 New Hire Safety Orientation Energy Technologies Area (ETA) September 14, 2016

2 Safety is our first priority. It must be an integral part of everything we do at ETA. We practice Integrated Safety Management (ISM) principles:  Define Scope of Work  Analyze Hazards  Develop and Implement Controls  Perform the Work  Provide Feedback and Improve Welcome to ETA!

3 The “Activity Manager” system is used for authorizing personnel to perform specific types of work. Work Activities have been established that describe scope of work, types of hazards, and established safety controls. Personnel must access Activity Manager to review and accept their Work Activity assignments prior to starting work. 4 Login to Activity Manager: https://wpc-am.lbl.govhttps://wpc-am.lbl.gov “My Work” Page lists all of your notifications, (A) indicates Action Required. Locate the actionable notification titled Worker Authorization Click "Read Full Description" Click the link "Go to Full Detail” Review the Description of Work, Hazards, and Controls (3 separate tabs) Click the blue pull-down box "Choose An Action" on the top right of the screen Choose "Accept Conditions" Click "OK" Accepting Work Activities

6 Safety training requirements are pre-determined through assignment to one or more Work Activities in the Activity Manager system. Some courses must be completed before work can be performed (Radiation, Laser). All other courses should be completed within 30 days. Go to the Berkeley Lab Training website for course descriptions and links to on-line training courses and for classroom training course registration.Berkeley Lab Training website Your training profile and course status can also be viewed under the “Dashboards” tab on your Activity Manager home page. Training reminders are sent to your LBNL email account. Check regularly or have messages forwarded to your non-LBNL account. Safety Training

7 Make sure your work area is set-up properly and you have needed equipment. You are required to complete an on-line ergonomic self- assessment by going to: http://www.lbl.gov/ehs/training/webcourses/EHS0059/ http://www.lbl.gov/ehs/training/webcourses/EHS0059/ If needed, request a ergonomic evaluation by an ergonomist by going to: https://ehswprod.lbl.gov/Ergo/Start.asp https://ehswprod.lbl.gov/Ergo/Start.asp If you are experiencing discomfort, don’t wait. Let your supervisor know right away! Ergonomics

8 All personnel are encouraged to submit safety suggestions or concerns they may have. You can submit your Safety Concern by: Submitting the EHSS Safety Concerns formEHSS Safety Concerns Emailing to safetyconcerns@lbl.gov; orsafetyconcerns@lbl.gov Calling the Safety Concerns Hotline at x5514 You can submit concerns anonymously. All submitted safety concerns are tracked and actions taken communicated. Safety Concerns

9 Report all work related accidents to Health Services at Building 26 Health Services Clinic or by calling X6266. For life threatening emergencies, immediately call 911. Let your supervisor know about the accident as soon as possible. All accidents should be reported no matter how minor they may at first seem. Report accidents promptly. Don’t wait until the injury gets worse! Accident Reporting

10 For life threatening emergencies, call X911. Includes: ambulance and fires. For non-life threatening emergencies, call X6999 for assistance. Includes: chemical spills, power outages, flooding, etc. Red “Emergency Guide” flip charts containing specific emergency procedures are posted in all buildings and lab areas. Know your building evacuation routes and evacuation assembly area. Know where emergency equipment is located. This includes fire extinguishers and fire alarm pull stations. Emergency Procedures

11 In the event of an earthquake: Drop, cover, and hold After shaking stops, evacuate building Take car keys and small personal items Follow Building Emergency Team instructions Do not attempt to re-enter buildings until deemed safe LabAlert provides timely emergency alerts to via text message on your cell phone. It supplements the Public Address system to quickly alert you of emergency conditions. 12 Your supervisor will give you a brief walkthrough of your work area. Make sure you are familiar with the following: Locations of emergency equipment such as fire extinguisher Locations of phones and fire alarm pull stations. Building evacuation routes and evacuation assembly area. When entering lab areas, always wear safety glasses with side shields, closed toe shoes and long pants. If you are not sure about something- ASK Work Area Walk Through
