2. Some terms to know Islam = the religion Muslim = the believer Koran or Qu’ran = the holy book of Islam

3. What are the Five Pillars of Islam? They are the basic things that all good Muslims try to do.

4. #1: Declaration of Faith (Kalima) To become a Muslim, a person states that there is no other God but Allah, and that Mohammed is his messenger.

5. #2: Prayer (Salat) Muslims pray five times a day, while facing towards the holy city of Mecca.

7. #3: Fasting (Sawm) Muslims fast (they don’t eat any food or even drink water) during the daytime for the entire holy month of Ramadan. This is to help them remember the suffering of the poor.

9. #4: Giving to the needy (Zakat) Muslims give a percentage of their money to the needy, to new converts, to travelers and to those overwhelmed by debt.

11. #5: Pilgrimage (Hajj) At least once in his or her lifetime, every Muslim who is physically and financially able to do so must go on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

14. About the Quran The Quran is Islam’s holy book. In it is written the messages that the prophet Mohammed received from Allah through the angel Gabriel.
