5  Ciudad Juarez is not known for many natural resources or agricultural production. Being a big city, their economy is strongly based on industry. There are more than 300 assembly plants, known as maquiladoras, located throughout the city. In 2008 Ciudad Juarez was named “The City of the Future” by fDi Magazine. Boeing, Lexmark, and Bosch are a few of many foreign companies who have business operations in the city. Resources of Ciudad Juarez

6  El Paso del Norte was founded by Friar Garcia de San Francisco in 1659. The first settlement of the town was the Mision de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. By the 17 th century, a wooden bridge had been built across the Rio Grande and there were settlements on both sides of the river. The main population consisted of nearby Indian tribes, and the Spanish and immigrants brought by them to be their slaves. Many Puebloan people also moved to settlements around the mission after wars and revolts. The area reached a population of 5,000 by 1750. The Rio Grande was established as the border between the U.S. and Mexico by the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The city also temporarily held Benito Juarez during the French Intervention in Mexico until he could establish a government in Chihuahua. The city began to grow rapidly due to free trade and was also the first meeting place between a U.S. and Mexican president. During the Mexican revolution, Francisco Madero took over the city with a force of 500 soldiers. Since then, the city has been continuing to expand. History of El Paso Del Norte

8  The result of the Spanish colonization was that Spanish explorers had a way across the Rio Grande and into the southern Rocky Mountains. It also set up the national language of Mexico to be Spanish, but that was mainly because they made everyone speak it. It also brought Spanish foods and customs from Europe that mixed with the native cuisine. There were also many Spanish Jews that came to ciudad Mexico to escape persecution from Queen Isabel and the Spanish Inquisition. Result of Spanish Colonization

This meant the murder rate had went down since 2008 when the city was ranked #1 in the world of highest reported murders with 130 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. Also in 2008, it was reported that more than 1600 young women were murdered that year alone. Cases of these victims usually included rape, torture, mutilation, and murder. A lot of those murder cases remain unsolved. The supposed reason for the recent drop in the murder rate is because the Sinaloa cartel defeating a lot of its rivals, including the Juarez Cartel. One of the most famous ones is the Benito Juarez Monument, located in central Juarez. It stands 8 feet high and was actually casted in Florence, Italy. Another one of the most popular ones is the Mision de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. It was the first permanent settlement in the area. One that is not as popular is the City of Paquime. It was once home to a civilization of merchants who left the area in the 15 th century. Chazmil Park is also located in the city and was once a fighting place between the U.S. and Mexico.
