2 Linking Verbs Many verbs are action words. These verbs may tell the action that the subject did in the past. Some verbs do not show action.

3 Linking Verbs The verbs was and were do not show action. These verbs are linking verbs. They link the subject to a word that tells about the subject in the past.

4 Linking Verbs Use was when there is one in the subject. Use were when there is more than one in the subject.
