Aira and Lindsey’s Adventure to the Rainforest By: Aira and Lindsey

What is the rainforest? A rainforest is a place where it is hot and wet. Also thousands of different kinds of animals and trees live there. It always rains in the rainforest at least once a day.

Location of Rain Forests There are rain forests in Central America, Hawaii, South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Madagascar. All rainforests are located around the equator.

Emergent Layer The top layer is the emergent layer. The tops of a few of the tallest trees are in the emergent layer. Some of these trees grow over 200 ft. tall.

Canopy Layer The thick canopy layer receives most of the sunlight and rain. Animals that live in the canopy are the sloth, toucan, jaguars, and the boa constrictor. The canopy layer blocks out everything under it.

Understory Layer The understory is below the canopy. Only little sunlight reaches the little trees and the bushes. There are a lot of animals in the understory like the humming bird, monkeys bats, and the red eye tree frog.

Forest Floor The dark forest floor is the bottom layer. It is covered with fallen leaves, fruits, and flowers. The animals that live here are the jaguar, armadillo, and more.

Deforestation People cut down trees to make money from the wood. There are fewer animals and less oxygen without trees. Some people set fires to make room for farming and grazing animals.

People of the Rain Forest Many people paint their bodies with colorful dyes and use feathers and flowers. Some rainforest people are as tall as 4ft. Since the leaves are so big they can use the leaves as an umbrella.
