3 Parents - Help Us Help You  Make sure your phone and email are correct in PORTAL (record’s clerk)  Listen to all connect ed calls and read every syllabus  Web sites to visit often  Osceola H S  Guidance page  Pinellas County web page

4 Help Us Help you  Email is the best way to reach me  mcdanielpa@pcsb.org  Give counselors and teachers ample time to respond, 24 hours.  If a counselor or teacher does not get back to you - Second Request in subject line

5 ABSENCE  Make-up work is not equal to the experience of in-class activities  In math one day after school for each day abs.  5 absences = take all exams  Less than ½ class time = 1 absence  3 tardies = 1 absence

6 Absences  If absence is incorrect  I cannot correct absences  Regular absence – email teacher  School related – email clerk  School related functions – give us 3 days to correct

7 PERMIT TO LEAVE (PTL)  Call or send a note in advance to get a PTL

8 Good to Know I cannot take a child out of a class without due process – If their schedule is incorrect  No request to change classes will be done via email  Student picks up a schedule correction form in the lunchroom  Fill it out completely  Student returns it to me

9 Good to Know Due process if your child is struggling or has a problem in a class–  Contact the teacher first  Your child’s version is an editorial  You want a news story – ask for the facts  Is your student doing homework with fidelity?  Is your student paying attention in class?  Is your student asking questions or seeking help?  Is your student placed correctly?

10 You catch more bees with honey  “Hi, thank you for all you do as a teacher. I know how dramatic kids can be. Today _____ came home and said “ ______”. I know that this is his/her perception. Can you remember anything that might have happened to give ______ that idea? I would like to coach him/her on his/her behavior.

11 Think about it  When you sign the homework, you are verifying that this is your child’s best work

12 Save Yourself Frustration  Call and talk to the RECORDS clerk for any changes in contact information  Make copies of any paperwork before you hand it in.  Read EVERY syllabus

13 9 th grade parent meetings Please come to the 9 th grade parent meetings Same night as the PTSA meetings – counts as your meeting Important information for freshmen parents I am available for questions

14 Mrs. McDaniel’s Advice  Do not do anything for your child that he/she is capable of doing for themselves.  They can email.  They can get paperwork.  They can look up information on our web site.  They can make appointments to talk to me and to have conference.  The more time I spend communicating with you means less time with students

15 Expectations  Dig out your High School Transcript  Avoid anxiety producing statements  Ask open ended questions:  Tell me……(How, what, when, where?)  Avoid “Why”

18 Parent Fundamental Expectations  Sign and adhere to the Fundamental Commitment Agreement.  Attend eight PTSA, SAC, or Booster meetings throughout the year.  Attend all parent-teacher conferences when scheduled.  Sign all homework assignments and tests per policy.

19 Save Yourself Frustration  Get to know how the teacher operates  In math – don’t wait until your child is drowning to get help – we have math tutoring almost every day  Ask the teacher for tutoring schedule  Check portal daily – ask your child first  Say, “Tell me about…..”

20 Mrs. McDaniel’s Advice  Give your child the “pole” position after graduation  Make your child responsible for anything they are capable of doing.  Have your child write all emails that pertain to information they need  Be the best model

21 Your Child’s Perception  Just remember –  You’re the meanest mom/dad  No other dad/mom ……..  You don’t love me/I hate you  Everyone else gets to……..  You make me do all the work!  You never let me do anything!  You never …….  You always……

24 Exam Exemptions  Course grade of "A" or "B" in the 1st and 2nd six weeks and  A provisional course grade of “A” or “B” in the 3rd six  The provisional 3rd six weeks grade will be based on the grades earned for the first four weeks of the third grading period.  The student must maintain the “A” or “B” grade through the remainder of the 3rd six weeks.  No more than three courses each semester.

25 Exceptions  1. The student is enrolled in the same course during two (2) terms of the same school year.  2. The student has been enrolled in a District public high school for less than the entire term.  3. The student has five (5) or more absences per semester in any class; excused or unexcused. (take the final exam in all classes)  4. Preapproved absences for school sponsored activities, religious holidays, and college/post-secondary visitation shall not be counted
