Food chains This is a food chain. The owl eats the mouse that eats the caterpillar that eats the leaf The start of a food chain is called a producer

These are consumers they eat plants, producers or other animals. The fox is going to eat the rabbit. The fox is a predator and the rabbit is prey.

Facts about some of the animals that you might find in a rock pool The Starfish – or Sea Star – may be one of the most beautiful creatures in the ocean. They’re fascinating beings to only be a little larger than a tea cup. Let’s check out some amazing facts about the starfish you may not know. 1. They have no brain and no blood. Starfish use filtered sea water to pump nutrients through their nervous system. 2. They can be really heavy. At least for something of their small size, sea stars can weigh up to 11 pounds. 3. They have a lot of birthdays!

Tom pot blenny fish The Tom pot Blenny is a deep brown/orange colour and has a pair of tentacles above the eyes and darker stripes along the body. This super-clever fish just loves British rock pools! If its chosen pool dries out, it is able to climb out and crawl into a better one, pulling itself along on its strong fins and breathing across its slimy skin - wowzers! Wowzers!

prawns The Prawn has a light pink or brown body that has some reddish patterns. They can be hard to see in the rock pools as they are so well camouflaged. Females grow faster than males and lay an astonishing 50,000 to 1 million eggs!

Hermit crab These soft-bodied crabs live in discarded snail or periwinkle shells and the shells of other molluscs As they grow, the crabs abandon overly snug shells in favour of a larger abode. Funky Facts: One empty shell can trigger a property rush - battles for the best shells have even been known to become a bit feisty!.

limpets The limpet is greyish white and dome-shaped. Limpets can live for 15 years if they grow slowly. If there’s lots of food they grow faster but only live 2-3 years. They cling to hard surfaces and help keep algal levels under control. limpets
