5 A- IMPACTS of PREVENTING SCHOOL DROPOUTS Education is the fundamental way of ensuring a better future for young people within the principle of social and individual development. One of the fundamental objectives of education is to mobilize the young population potential. The rate of school dropout provides information about economic, social and cultural conditions of the countries. Negative consequences of school dropouts affects the people, their families and the whole community. 5

6 A- IMPACTS of PREVENTING SCHOOL DROPOUTS Communities, that are aware of the importance of those results, pay attention the studies aiming dropout prevention. The goal is to detect the students at the risk of dropout before they leave and implement the best solutions to keep them at the schools. THE GOAL of STUDIES 6

Guidance and Research Centers within the District Directorates of Education are also lead projects and applications for dropout prevention. 9

11 C- SCHOOL DROPOUTS PREVENTION PRECAUTIONS at SECONDARY SCHOOLS B-School Development Management Team’s Practices Related to Dropout Prevention Project of School Development Management Team targets a well planned development. It recommends schools to determine the problems and participate in the process of creating a solution. All secondary schools must establish a School Development Management Team. One of the task of this team is to recognize the students at the risk of dropout and set up a commission to deal with the those students. 11

12 C- SCHOOL DROPOUTS PREVENTION PRECAUTIONS at SECONDARY SCHOOLS Tasks: a) Plan and implement School Development Plan b) Make status analysis and determine the problems of the school, c) Determine the strategic targets of the school and set up a commission 12

13 C- AN APPLICATON for DROPOUT PREVENTION of GAZİOSMANPAŞA KIZ TEKNİK ve MESLEK LİSESİ SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM (GOPKML SDMT ) School Development Management Team of Gaziosmanpasa Technical and Vocational High School for Girls concluded that school dropouts and repeats emerged commonly at the 9th grade with compared to other grades in 2010-2011 academic year, by examining school records. It has prepared a work program on this topic. 13

15 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM GOPKML SDMT WORK PROGRAMME 1) There are 2 responsible teachers for one classroom 2)Recognition forms for risky students has been prepared (FORM 1). (Criterions -a)10 days or more absences) b)3 or more poor degrees, c)discipline problems With the help of students recognition forms, we could collect more detailed data about students 15

16 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 3) Exam results are being monitored from E-School software all time. As an example: we have monitored that 30 students out of 47 have three or more poor degree in the 9/Y1 classroom. We have concluded that there is great risk of dropout among those students. 4) We have regular personal interviews with the students (FORM2) At the interviews: a) The causes of failure. b) The familial and economic circumstances. c) Personal problems and other causes are addressed. 16

17 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 5) Parent interviews;(FORM3) Parent interviews is very important to determine the causes of the student's academic failure.During those interviews the child's home environment, sibling relationships, economic status, friendship relations are discussed. 6)Interviews With the Class Teachers; The negotiations with the teachers provide details about classroom. Student-Teacher communication problems are evaluated together. 17

18 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 7) Questionnaire of reasons for failure are being made and solution proposals are made according to those reasons. (FORM4) 8)Irregular students and students with psychological problems are directed to the guidance service. 9) Students are provided information about efficient studying techniques by the counselling service. 10) Student absences are monitored and discussed with students.Families are informed about it. E-school attendance are monitored. 18

19 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM Applications of GOPKML SDMT are being continued by the support of students in our school. As the Project team: We believe that students should continue their education without any interruption if we want a society where the living standards are high, unemployment is not the problem, people have qualified professionals, people develop and enrich their differences, criminal behavior is less and the most important one is that people are happy. 19

20 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM Our purpose is to achieve that the students stay in education process by identifying earlier the students having the risk of leaving school 20
