3 MANAGEMENT The word ‚management‘ might have several meanings: 1.specific activity – a profession or an activity in which a manager does not perform tasks by himself, but through other people – subordinates 2.group of managers – staff in the company‘s management 3.discipline – an area of the study that deals with the establishment of procedures how to achieve the company‘s goals the most efficiently

4 Literature offers a lot of definitions of ‚management‘ Some of them emphasize the content of managerial work: Management is a set of opinions, experiences, recommendations, approaches and methods that managers use to achieve specific activities (managerial functions) that are necessary to reach the organization‘s goals. 5 The other definitions emphasize the meaningfulness of management: Management is the art to make people do what is necessary. Another key factors of managerial activities: Management is mobilizing and stimulating of all sources of the institution to achieve desired benefits. MANAGEMENT DEFINITION

6 Managerial functions are typical activities performed by managers. Managerial functions are divided into four groups:PlanningOrganizingLeadingControlling Human resource management is also considered as a component of managerial functions. Another managerial functions that deal with all already mentioned functions are decision-making function and communication. Managerial functions

7 Planning Planning– a function that involves a process of defining goals, formulating strategies to achieve predetermined goals and plans for coordination and integration of particular activities. Organizing Organizing – a function that involves setting tasks, determination who will perform them when arranging into groups, who will pass on the reports or where the decisions will be made. Leading Leading – a function of leading is a motivation of subordinates, influencing individuals or teams, selection of communication and management problems. controlling controlling– a function of controlling is monitoring actual output, its comparing with standards and possibly searching for corrective measures.

Another classification of managerial functions is a system of POSDCORB. The author is an American L. Gulick. When he was 3O years old, he arranged a new way of managerial function. The name is an acronym from the initial letters of English names of each function.
