3 What is EarthCube? Transform the conduct of data-enabled geoscience- related research. Create effective community- driven cyberinfrastructure. Allow global data discovery and knowledge management. Achieve interoperability and data integration across disciplines.

Nature does not recognize separate disciplines EarthCube will democratize access to data EarthCube will increase research time by reducing time needed to find, access, and analyze data EarthCube will enable more interdisciplinary research and the pursuit of new questions EarthCube will accelerate the pace of discovery EarthCube will give all scientists the same chance of making major contributions regardless of institution size or institutional endowment

19 Test Enterprise Governance and Research Coordination Networks The National Science Foundation' s Directorate for Geosciences and Office of Cyberinfrastructure EarthCube: Developing a Community-Driven Data and Knowledge Environment for the Geosciences Solicitation and Amendment I The number of anticipated awards for this amendment is seven (7). Deadline for both the EarthCube Test Enterprise Governance and EarthCube Research Coordination Networks is 5pm proposer's local time on March 26, 2013.

20 Applifying USGS Data challenge.gov concept The U.S. Geological Survey Core Science Analytics and Synthesis Program deals with both the biogeographic layer of the Critical Zone and a developing capability in informatics and cyberinfrastructure. Innovative ideas on leveraging the various web services provided by some of our data systems in new and creative applications. Focus on the problems of data discovery and integration in the USGS and with our partners. Judged on their relevance to today’s scientific challenges, innovative use of the datasets, and overall ease of use of the application.

22 USGS datasets for the contest consist of a range of earth science data types, including: several million biological occurrence records (terrestrial and marine) thousands of metadata records related to research studies, ecosystems, and species vegetation and land cover data for the United States, including detailed vegetation maps for the National Parks authoritative taxonomic nomenclature for plants and animals of North America and the world. Collectively, these datasets are key to a better understanding of many scientific challenges we face globally. Identifying new, innovative ways to represent, apply, and make data available
