EarthCube Community Engagement Personas Erin Robinson Foundation for Earth Science
“A persona is a user archetype you can use to help guide decisions about product features, navigation and even visual design” - Kim Goodwin, Cooper
Why are we doing this?
– Domain scientists Atmospheric or Space Weather scientist Oceanographer Geologist Geophysicist Hydrologist Critical zone scientist Climate scientist Biologist or Ecosystems scientist Geographers – Social scientist Anthropologist Economist Psychologist Sociologist – Computer or Cyberinfrastructure scientists Data manager High performance computing expert Software engineer IT user support personnel – Other Groups K-12 educator Designer/developer of geoscience instrumentation Environmental resource manager Policy makers
Traditional Personas Ashley – Computer Scientist Ashley was born and raised in Boise, Idaho. She’s married to Todd, who installs sprinklers. Ashley juggles in her spare time. She programs in Python. She would like EarthCube to enable her to more efficiently spread and reuse applications.
I want to build/support EarthCube I want to use EarthCube Stakeholder Activity (domain, Career length? Modular Personas
I identify as a Computer Scientist User needs – Feedback from workshops EarthCube Vision – same for every persona Specific benefits to CS/CI groups (Incentives) Community links – Ning, List-servs, Workshops Do you know these tools exist? How can you get involved? Comp Sci/CI Yolanda Gill is a computer scientist. She builds applications for scientist. Currently she works with a single group at a time. With EarthCube, she would like for her applications to be available
Social Sci Dom. Sci Comp Sci/CI Early Career Edu/K -12 Policy Where do you fit? Atmos phere Ocean Solid Earth Coasta l
Community Engagement Outputs Near-term – Web pages with relevant EarthCube-material – 1-pg stakeholder-specific material Long-term – Feedback from users on design requirements
