3. WHY IS IT A PROBLEM? Plastic is a problem in our oceans because: Harming marine animals. Making oceans full of pollution from the cause of oils, petrol bottles, drinks that have been thrown away etc.. 2

4. WHAT TYPE OF RUBBISH IS IN OUR OCEANS? Types of rubbish are: 10% Maritime transportation 10% Industrial wastewater 5% Offshore oil 5% Litter 30% Sewage 20% Farm runoff 20% Air pollutions 3

5. WHAT CAN THIS DO TO MARINE ANIMALS? Rubbish is affecting marine animals by killing them or damaging them in many different ways. As you can see the picture on the left shows this turtle has suffered this since it was a baby because the plastic has made him grow into a different shape. Many animals are much worse than this and many have been killed. 4

6. WHAT DO MARINE ANIMALS THINK RUBBISH IS? Most marine animals think that plastic bags are jellyfish (mostly turtles). That is why so many are killed because they eat them. 5

7. HOW MANY ANIMALS ARE GETTING KILLED EACH YEAR BY EATING PLASTIC IN OUR OCEANS? 100,000 marine animals die each year from eating different types of rubbish in our oceans. 6

8. WAYS WE CAN STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING! 1.Reduce 2.Reuse 3.Recycle 4.Pick up rubbish. 5.Make sure you put your rubbish into the right bins! 6.Don’t tip anything that does not go into sinks like oil, tissues etc. 7.Don’t drop any rubbish on the ground If everyone does this we can prevent the horrible things in our oceans. 7

9. SUMMARY There is lots of rubbish in our oceans that is harming marine life and the environment. Marine life have suffered by living and eating rubbish. We can make a difference by protecting the environment and by putting rubbish in the right place. 8
