14 SECONDARY ACADEMIC CONCENTRATION (SAC) NC State licensure requires a Secondary Academic Concentration. There are four options: Social Studies, Psychology, Global Issues, Diversity Studies, or Math, Science, & Technology. Required courses are available through community colleges and the cohort. SAC coursework must be completed prior to Student Teaching. You may substitute another, or complete an additional, SAC; contact the cohort’s Academic Advisor to discuss options.

15 DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION Courses will be offered only ONCE to each cohort; students must take courses as they are made available. Any courses not satisfactorily completed (C or better) must be accomplished ASAP, where and when possible. Coursework will be delivered fall, spring and summer semesters. Faculty will typically deliver courses face-to-face at the ASU Center-Hickory; occasionally, online or hybrid courses are possible.

16 REQUIRED GRADES You must maintain a minimum 2.7 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on Appalachian coursework, to meet Teacher Education requirements. (Note: If you took Appalachian coursework prior to Fall 2016 you must maintain a minimum 2.5 gpa.) You must earn a minimum grade of 2.0 (C) in each required major course. C- is not adequate.

17 SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM As a requirement for the program, you must complete 40 service-learning hours: 20 hours–Directed Elective 10 hours– CI 3000 10 hours- CI 3110

18 TIME IN SCHOOL SETTINGS Certain cohort courses require time in actual school settings. You must plan ahead to ensure this additional time can be committed for each: PSY 3010, Psychology Applied to Teaching – 40 hrs SPE 3300, Creating Inclusive Learning Communities and CI 3000, Learner Diversity –completed concurrently over 12 full days (scheduled by Program) CI 4000, Elementary School Curriculum and Instruction – One day per week during the first 10 weeks, full-time the last five weeks (scheduled by Program) CI 4900, Student Teaching – a 12-credit course/full-time in a classroom setting

21 ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION Teacher Education status is required of all education majors. In order to register for cohort courses Spring 2018 and beyond, you must meet all requirements and be admitted to Teacher Education by the College of Education. The cohort’s Program Manager will assist you with the application process. Before the Spring 2018 semester – you must have: Attained passing scores on PRAXIS Core (or an equivalent) Total college credit of at least 45 sh Completed at least 12 sh, and a minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA, on Appalachian coursework Completed CI 2300, FDN 2400, and the equivalent of ENG 1000 - with a minimum of a “C” (2.0) grade in all

22 PRAXIS Core SCORES PRAXIS Core measures basic skills in reading, writing, and math – and sufficient scores are required for formal admission into Teacher Education. ● Please visit http://lap.appstate.edu/praxis-core for additional information regarding the Praxis Core test!http://lap.appstate.edu/praxis-core Passing Core Scores Reading – 156 and above Writing – 162 and above Math – 150 and above North Carolina is currently accepting a composite score of 468 as a way to pass the Praxis Core.

26 Accelerated Admission “Accelerated Admission: Baccalaureate to Master’s,” is intended for undergraduate students who wish to enroll in graduate courses during their senior year that fulfill both undergraduate and graduate course requirements toward the completion of a graduate degree program. Eligible students: Have a 3.4* GPA (on Appalachian coursework) 90 hours Are ready to take graduate coursework. Note: the GRE or MAT is not required for admission to the Graduate School for those in the Accelerated Admissions program.

27 MA/Special Education K-12 Master level licensure Autism Graduate Certificate 12 hours conducted during undergraduate and only 24 remaining to complete MA MA courses are the most current and up-to-date with best practices in special education. Learn how to be a consumer of researched practices to select what interventions are best for students!!

28 Tuition & Fees Undergraduate Tuition & Fees 2016-17 Academic Year: $159.51 per semester hour (in-state student) $650.01 per semester hour (out-of-state student) Tuition and fees are set annually, and modest annual increases can be expected. Each course will vary in requirements for textbooks, etc. Other incremental costs may be necessary, e.g. criminal background check cost, edTPA, PRAXIS CORE & NES test.

30 Consortium Agreement Appalachian off-campus programs typically provide 6 sh (half-time benefits). Students who take required lower-level courses through a community college will report those hours for financial aid via a Consortium Agreement form. Consortium Agreement The completed Consortium Agreement forms should be returned to the Office of Distance Education for review and submission to the financial aid office. For your convenience you may give your completed Consortium Agreement forms to Buffy Sisk, Program Manager at Hickory, Laura Rhinehart, Program Assistant at Hickory or Karen Laws, Program Assistant at the Caldwell Center.

(EX: CI 2300, section # 350) You can continue through the process until you have all your courses listed on the right and then click on “choose books”
