1 Dual Enrollment Information for Students and Families Fall 2015/Spring 2016

2 What is dual enrollment?  Dual enrollment allows students to earn college credit that will also count as high school credit. You may take courses at the college to satisfy your graduation requirements.

3 Do I qualify for dual enrollment?  Must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale  Meet the minimum SAT/ACT requirements  Be on track to complete the required high school curriculum (RHSC).  Complete the High School Counselor/Parent Consent Form for ACCEL or MOWR permission form  Be a resident of Georgia as outlined by the high school or the University System of Georgia

5 ACCEL  The ACCEL program allows students to take courses at both the high school and college.  The number of courses students are allowed to take will vary depending on the SAT scores.  You may enroll in 1 course if your SAT combined score (math and critical reading) is between (ACT 21-23).  You may enroll in 1-3 courses if your SAT combined score (math and critical reading) is 1100 or greater (ACT 24).

6 The ACCEL Scholarship  Covers tuition only  Students are responsible for covering the costs of fees.  Attempted hours do not count toward HOPE Paid Hours Limit  To qualify, you must be enrolled at a qualifying Georgia public or private high school.  You must be a resident of Georgia as defined by the University System of Georgia.  Set up an account on and submit and ACCEL application after you have been admitted to Armstrong.www.gacollege411.org  You must submit a new ACCEL application every semester.

7 Move on When Ready Must enroll in a full-time college course load of semester hours This is typically a course load of 4 courses. You cannot take classes at the high school. To qualify, you must be enrolled at a qualifying Georgia public high school. Must be a resident of Georgia as defined by your high school Have been at your high school for the last two FTE counts (March and October) MOWR pays your full tuition and mandatory fees (books and some other non-mandatory fees are excluded)

8 Benefits of dual enrollment  Earn college credit while still in high school.  Create a smooth transition from high school to college.  Be exposed to diverse coursework opportunities.  Use of campus amenities such as the library, recreation center, tutoring services, and more.  Gain the potential to lighten your college course load and still graduate on time, or graduate early.

9 How do I apply for admissions? Armstrong Application for Undergraduate Admissions $25 application fee Official high school transcript in a sealed envelope Official SAT or ACT scores sent directly to Armstrong from the testing service or listed on your official high school transcript. Immunization records High school counselor/Parent consent form (for ACCEL only) MOWR checklist (for MOWR only)  Submit your completed application packet to the Office of Academic Orientation and Advisement in Solms Hall room 212.

10 What courses are available?  ACCEL and MOWR covered courses include:  English  Math  Science  Social Science  History  Foreign Languages For a complete list of Armstrong approved courses, visit

11 What do I do now?  Take the SAT or ACT as soon as possible  Talk to your high school counselor about your requirements for graduation and how dual enrollment will fit your needs.  Talk to your parents about the benefits and challenges of dual enrollment. You want to be sure you are up for the challenge.  Apply early. Students are eligible to sign up for courses as early as April for the fall semester.

12  Complete application for enrollment. Must include SAT/ACT scores, official high school transcripts and consent forms.  Return the application packet to Shannon Vo in Solms Hall room 212. The building is located on Science Drive.  A decision is usually made in 3-4 weeks from the date of submission, so it’s very important for you to apply early.

13 What happens upon acceptance?  You will receive an acceptance letter from Armstrong via postal mail.  You will be contacted by the Office of Academic Orientation and Advisement to set up an advisement appointment to register for courses and discuss your graduation requirements. It is imperative that you ascertain your graduation requirements and scheduling needs from your high school counselor BEFORE you meet with the dual enrollment advisor.

14 FAQ Q: If I want to take a course other than those covered under the ACCEL scholarship, can I do so? A: Yes, you may take courses that are not covered under ACCEL, but that should not be necessary. You have a great selection of eligible courses from which to choose. However, if you decide to take a course that is not eligible for ACCEL, you will need to be prepared to pay the full tuition for that course.

15 FAQ Q: What happens if I do not make good grades? A: If you earn a grade of D or lower, you will be ineligible to continue the program.

16 FAQ Q: I am taking AP classes. How will that affect my college course placement? A: If your AP score earns you college credit for a course, you must have your AP scores sent directly to Armstrong from College Board. We cannot accept student or high school copies of AP scores. Once your test scores are processed by the registrar’s office, we will place you in the appropriate course level.

17 Dual Enrollment Vs. AP credits Please have this conversation with me or your counselor. You need to determine what is best for you based on your courses and college selections. The best choice will differ from student to student.
