YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE AMAZING – YOU DO HAVE TO BE HONEST CHARACTER & LEADERSHIP

LEADERSHIP LESSON 1 Leadership Traits Actions Examples Character Traits Actions Examples

CHARACTER What everyone must know about the word – CHARACTER Actions are the TRUE indicator of character Character is a matter of personal choice Strong character is the foundation of success

LEADERSHIP People rarely follow others who are self- absorbed. True leaders exhibit the quality of “other mindedness” They think of others, before thinking of themselves.

THESE ACTIONS COUNT …if a boxer – get up off the mat just ONE MORE TIME than you’re knocked down …if a soldier – go over the hill, even if you DON’T KNOW what’s on the other side …if a student, DO THE WORK, because you are building a great you, even if you can’t see it yet …if a leader – LEAD no matter if anyone is following or watching – or not

CHARACTER Commitment is what backs up words. Look how you spend your time, are you REALLY committed, or do you just SAY you are? The EDISON METHOD: Make your plans public – then, you might be more committed to following through on them.

LEADERSHIP - MESSAGE Communication is essential to leading We must be able to share knowledge and ideas in order to convey a sense of urgency, and enthusiasm to others. If we can’t get our message across clearly to motivate others to act, then having a message doesn’t even matter.

LEADERSHIP - SKILL Skills are not words – it’s our ability to “say it” and “plan it” and “do it” – in such a way that others KNOW we KNOW HOW – and that they want to follow us.

HAVE THE CHARACTER TO… Show up every day, and be ready to work Keep learning, growing & improving Do more than you say you’re going to do Inspire other people to do more too

LEADERSHIP – PRIORITIZED FOCUS THE KEYS: Priorities & Focus 1.Knowing priorities, without focus – you WHAT to do, but don’t get it done 2.Focus without priorities means excellence, and no progress 3.When you harness both priorities and focus – you have the potential to achieve greatness

LEADERSHIP - TIME Spend your time like this: 70% on what you already do well – do it even better 25% on NEW things You cannot grow, without change 5% on your weaknesses Either change them into strengths, or delegate them to someone else

CHARACTER - GENEROSITY A United States president said: “No person is ever honored for what they received. Honor is awarded for what is given.” Give your time, energy, effort, attention – to others.

CHARACTER - INITIATIVE You’ve heard of HILTON Hotels? The founder of those said: “Success is connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit”

LEADERSHIP – MAKE THINGS HAPPEN Know what you want Push yourself to act to achieve that Take more risks Make more mistakes

LEADERSHIP – CONNECTING WITH OTHERS In order to really hear someone, you have to be really silent (no words from your lips, no other sounds in your ears, no thoughts too loud in your head…) SILENT and LISENT SILENT LISTEN SAME LETTERS!

CHARACTER - HONESTY An effective leader encourages followers to tell him or her what needs to be said, not want is easy to hear. If you don’t allow others to speak the truth, even if it hurts, you’ll never know. Ignorance is NEVER a positive. If you ask someone to lie FOR you – you are giving them permission to lie TO you.

LEADERSHIP / CHARACTER  PASSION More than HALF of all Fortune 500 CEO’s were C students in college Almost ¾ of all US Presidents were in the BOTTOM half of their school classes Over HALF of all millionaire entrepreneurs never finished college. ALL these people have: PASSION  demonstrated by DOING, not TALKING (or posting)

CHARACTER – PERSEVERANCE The vast majority of people who fail – did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

CHARACTER - ATTITUDE ONE person is in charge of your attitude – YOU Attitude influences actions (actions reveal your character to others) Any group will mirror the attitude of it’s leader, eventually KEEPING a good attitude takes less energy than getting a good attitude BACK

LEADERSHIP – PROBLEM SOLVING Anticipate problems (and have a plan) Accept the truth (and move on) See the big picture (this helps ‘attitude’) Handle one thing at a time (remember focus?) Don’t give up on your major goal, even if you’re down (it’s temporary)

CHARACTER WE ALL SHARE We want to feel special We want a better tomorrow We desire direction We are selfish We get low sometimes We want success

LEADERSHIP – RESPONSIBILITY Success on any scale (inside your head, or running the country, or anything in between) requires us to take responsibility. The world is full of places where “it’s someone else’s fault”  and NO GOOD is to be found there.

CHARACTER – NEVER SURRENDER “Don’t quit, because ONCE you’re in that mode of quitting, then you feel like it’s OK.” Jerry Rice, BEST NFL Wide Receiver - ever

SERVANT LEADERSHIP Those who are truly, TRULY happy are those who have sought, and found out how – to serve.

LEADERSHIP - LEARNING It’s what you learn AFTER you know it all that counts. John Wooden, BEST College Basketball Coach - ever

LEADERSHIP – GROWING YOU & YOUR GROUP YOUR growth determines who YOU are Who YOU are determines WHO you attract to your group Who YOU attract to your group determines the success of that group If you want YOUR group to grow, YOU have to remain teachable

LEADERSHIP - DISNEY Walt Disney said “if you can dream it, you can do it” There is nothing impossible, only things not yet figured out. Mr. J

FINAL SLIDE Leadership is more than just a class. It’s more than posters and banners. It’s more than assemblies, dress up days, and lunchtime activities. It’s more than blood drives, and sister schools. Leadership is a class to learn about how to lead yourself, and others – from where you are, to where you want to be. We do not react, we act. We should do so on purpose, as leaders of ourselves and others.
