Impression Management Which masks do you wear???

Mainly used to show people our best features, but can be used in other ways. Impression Management

We need to realize THAT we do it, & understand WHY we do it.

Impression Management Give a TRUE impression of who you are… not just the RIGHT impression.

Impression Management For Example… Dress Meeting & Greeting Skills Grooming Why are these important?

Impression Management Effective leaders make it their business to make good first impressions because they have something important to say.

Impression Management We wear different masks in different situations. Which masks do you wear?

Image versus Self-Concept If self-concept is how you see yourself, image is how you are seen by others.

Image versus Self-Concept How you see yourself is important, but how others see you is critical to all you will do with them. How do we help others see us as we really are?

Image versus Self-Concept Impression Management Theory is what psychologists call the way we act in public. These are the things we do when someone is watching so they’ll think of us in a certain way.

Image versus Self-Concept Do you wash your hands? The study we went over in class showed that when people thought they were alone, over 90% of the time they did not wash their hands. But, when they knew someone else was with them in the restroom, they washed their hands over 85% of the time.

Public vs. Private Self First impressions are important because… We represent more than just ourselves.

Public vs. Private Self When you make a fool of yourself, who else do you make look bad? Is this fair? What consequences could you face?

Public vs. Private Self You can’t have a public self that is different from your private self. You must be the same person all the time.

Public vs. Private Self Examples of differing selves: -Bill Clinton -Penn State Coach -CFB Superintendent

Public vs. Private Self What are you marketing when you meet someone for the first time?

Public vs. Private Self You are marketing your… -Beliefs -Thoughts -Ideas -Dreams -Hopes -Solutions

True Leadership True leaders are motivated by two things: 1) Convictions about life, and 2) Convictions about others.

True Leadership Leadership is NOT about: You and what you can attain for yourself personally Position, power, money, etc. Leadership IS about: Serving other people

True Leadership Leadership is putting the needs and concerns of others before your own. Like the needs of your: School, country, friends, family, customers, employees, etc.

True Leadership Lead by example, through service. Those who are truly successful are those who are committed to serving the needs of others.

True Leadership What might it cost you to stand up for something you believe in? True leadership is having something to say and saying it, regardless of the cost.

True Leadership Who watches us? What are they saying when they see us?

Leaders are responsible for… 1)Their thoughts 2)Their attitudes, and 3)Their actions

A leader needs to take responsibility for what he/she is thinking because thoughts impact actions and they don’t want to send the wrong message to those who follow them.

What are some ways people can impact the way we think of ourselves? Social experiences (think about the babies).

Did you know… People who judge themselves more accurately tend to suffer from depression. Why is it so important to think positively about ourselves?

If we tend to have negative thoughts… Our negative thoughts will affect our attitude and … Limit our Potential!

We spend far too much time telling people what they can’t do, rather than encouraging them to just do it!

Is there such a thing as a “born loser”? NO! People are born with a desire to excel, not a desire to fail! Ex: Babies getting into everything (exploring)

You and only you are responsible for what you think. You control thoughts about… yourself, others, events in your life.

Automatic Thoughts Thoughts that automatically pop into your head. Most originate during childhood, but we don’t have to be controlled by them.

Examples of Automatic Thoughts: Strong people don’t ask for help If others criticize me, I must have done something wrong I should be happy all of the time I can’t help what happens to me What’s wrong with me?

Can anyone else control what I think? It is my mind and my thoughts, and I’m in charge of them! Who’s in charge of yours?

REVIEW TIME: We said it’s not your “IQ”, it’s your EQ, which measures your emotional intelligence (made up of the IPOSSESS qualities). Leaders do it the WIT Way, which means Whatever It Takes. The difference between doing well and truly excelling is 5% extra effort.

Two Steps to Changing a Bad Attitude: 1)Identify It! – Realize your attitude stinks. 2)Change our Thoughts – Through thought replacement you can replace negative thoughts with more positive ones.

Rational-Emotive Theory (Therapeutic model developed by Albert Ellis) Ellis said “Events cause thoughts, and thoughts cause feelings.”

FYI… -There are about 10 billion people on earth. -23-25 billion in the whole history of the earth -How many hands is that? How many are just like yours?

How can you use thought replacement to improve your attitude toward the following? Dieting (I will look amazing, I will be so much healthier) Your classmates (They mean well, I only have to spend 45 minutes out of 24 hours with them) People’s expectations of you (They expect so much because they know I am capable of great things) School, tests, and studying (They are preparing me for future success) Spending time with your parents and siblings (There will be a time when I won’t get to see them anytime I want, so I better enjoy it now).

Why is it important for leaders to be in control of their actions/behaviors? 1) Followers may pick up your bad behaviors 2) Followers may not think you are a good leader anymore.

We often blame who for our failures? This is called “passing the blame”.

Stop passing the buck… instead it should be “the buck stops here”.

Does the phrase, “You make me so mad!” make any sense? No! You make yourself mad. How can we express compassion rather than anger?

If someone breaks into my house… I choose how to react. If someone hurts my family… I choose my reaction.

Life is difficult… Who is in charge of how you handle it?
