3 What is Artstor? ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING Artstor is a non-profit organization that, through the Digital Library, brings together over two million images from the world’s museums, archives, and scholars. Artstor recently formed an alliance with ITHAKA, a not-for-profit devoted to advancing research and education through technology. Use the Artstor Digital Library to find images of artworks, photojournalism, maps, historical drawings, architecture, utilitarian objects, and many other types of media all in one place.

4 What can the Artstor Digital Library be used for? ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING Find images for papers and presentations The images in Artstor Digital Library have been cleared for use in education, meaning you can use these images for assignments, presentations, and papers without worrying long as you follow Artstor’s terms and conditions and cite the images you use. Find high resolution and rare images you can’t find on the web Artstor Digital Library contains large, clear, color-corrected images that you can easily download for use in research. There are thousands of images available in Artstor Digital Library that you can’t find through Google. Study images for exams Use the flashcard feature on Artstor Mobile or Artstor Cards to study images for exams.

5 Prohibited Uses of the Artstor Digital Library ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING There are some limitations on the use of images you find in Artstor Digital Library: You can’t use Artstor Digital Library images for commercial purposes (such as in advertisements, posters, or on items for sale like T-shirts) You can’t post Artstor Digital Library images on the open web (so no posting on Tumblr, Facebook, or Academia.edu) You can post Artstor Digital Library images on course websites such as Moodle, Schoology, or Blackboard. Aside from the Images for Academic Publishing program, you can’t reproduce Artstor Digital Library’s images in books or other publications You can find out who the rights holder is and contact them about reproductions. 6 Image Rights ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING You can use this image in a paper as long as you cite it. However, if you want to publish this image in a book or journal, you have to look to the information in the rights field to find who owns the rights to the image, and contact them about publication rights.

7 A Note on Image Sources ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING library.artstor.org _____ University’s collections (via Shared Shelf) Artstor Digital Library Collections Other institution’s collections (via Shared Shelf Commons) + + = When you access the Artstor Digital Library, you are also accessing images from other non-Artstor sources, which means you have many more images at your fingertips. When you use these images, check the collection source, and always be sure to read the rights field if you are not working with an Artstor Digital Library image. 8 How do I access the Artstor Digital Library? ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING On Campus: From the library’s E-Resources page (http://www.yourlibraryURL.com) Or at library.artstor.org library.artstor.org From Home: Register for an account from a computer on campus. You can then log in at library.artstor.org.library.artstor.org Or access through your library’s proxy server (http://www.yourlibraryURL.com) Don’t forget to register for an account! A registered account lets your save sets of images, download them directly into PowerPoint, and access Artstor from home.

9 Registered Accounts ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING By registering for an account, you can access Artstor from anywhere for 120 days. After 120 days you need to log in from on campus or through the library’s proxy server to reset your remote access. With a registered account, you can also download images and save image groups.

14 Finding Images in the Artstor Digital Library ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING Keyword Search Looking for specific images, or images from a particular time period? Conduct a keyword search and filter your results by date, classification, or geography. Refine Your Keyword Search with Filters: Click the + symbol next to “narrow your results” to reveal the filtering panels Available filters include: Date slider with data points Collection Type Classification Geography Advanced Search Narrow your results further by searching for title, creator, and other fields using the advanced search feature

18 Finding Images in the Artstor Digital Library: Advanced Search ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING Enter one or multiple search terms, selecting “AND” or “OR” from the dropdowns (Bombay OR Mumbai; Woman AND Girl) Select the field you would like to search (any field, title, creator, etc.) Enter a date range Check boxes for geography and/or classification

19 Downloading Images for Papers ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING Download a single image: Click the thumbnail of the image you’d like to download to open the image viewer Click the download button Accept the terms of use The image will download; descriptive information about the image is embedded in the image file or can be downloaded separately Learn more about embedded metadata on Artstor’s support site: support.artstor.orgsupport.artstor.org Remember to cite the image! You can download high quality images from Artstor Digital Library for use in papers and presentations. To download images, you need to be logged in to your registered account.

20 Citations ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING You can also save citations for the images you use in papers and presentations: Next, go to Tools >view and export citations Select each image you’d like a citation for, and go to Tools > Save citations for selected images

21 Citations ARTSTOR DIGITAL LIBRARY TRAINING Select the citations from the list that you’d like to export You can send them to EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, or Refworks Or you can just save them in printer friendly format
