2 Do Now  In the classwork section of your notebook, write “September 1, Do Now.”  Read the quote below and answer the following questions in 3-5 sentences.  “History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon.” Napolean Bonaparte  What does this quote say about history? Can there be different versions of history? Why or why not?

3 Learning About History  During this unit, we will learn about the Revolutionary War and about slavery from historical fiction and nonfiction.  Objective: We will be able to describe historical fiction, primary and secondary sources of nonfiction, and the difference between fact and opinions.

4 Informational Text Terms  Take notes as we discuss the following key terms:  Genre  Historical fiction  Nonfiction  Primary sources  Secondary sources  Fact  Opinion  We will have a short quiz on Thursday over these terms.

5 Informational Text Terms  A genre is…  A category of literature  Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson is…  Historical fiction

6 Historical Fiction  Definition:  An imaginary story that takes place in a real time period from the past

7 Historical Fiction  Characters:  All behave in realistic ways  May be real, fictional, or based on real people

8 Historical Fiction  Dialogue:  Words spoken by characters  Reflect the knowledge and thoughts of people from that time period

9 Historical Fiction  Setting:  Time – authentic time period in history  Place – a real historical place  Ex: Boston, 1630 or after

10 Historical Fiction  Plot:  Based on real events mixed with fictional events  The fictional events must be realistic

11 Historical Fiction  Conflict:  The characters face problems that are realistic

12 Historical Fiction  Even though it is imaginary, the story must be plausible (reasonable) and realistic to the time period

14 Nonfiction  Definition:  Writing or media based on facts, real events, or real people

15 Primary Sources  Definition:  A document or physical object that was written or created during the time period under study

16 Primary Sources  Examples:  Letters, speeches, diaries, newspaper articles from the time period, interviews with people from the time period, documents, photographs, artifacts

17 Secondary Sources  Definition:  A source that analyzes and interprets primary sources  Not directly from the time period under study

18 Secondary Sources  Examples:  History books, textbooks, encyclopedias, websites, educational magazines, documentaries

19 Primary vs. Secondary Activity  Directions:  I am going to give you examples of sources.  For each one, stand up if it is a primary source, and sit down if it is a secondary source.

21 Primary vs. Secondary Activity  A documentary about the Revolutionary War

22 Primary vs. Secondary Activity  A website about slavery

25 Understanding Check  What is the difference between nonfiction and historical fiction?

26 Fact vs. Opinion  People have different perspectives on historical events.  When learning from historical fiction and nonfiction texts, you must constantly evaluate whether you are learning facts or opinions.

27 Fact  Definition:  A statement that can be proven or checked

28 Opinion  Definition:  A statement that shows what the writer thinks, believes, or feels about a subject  It cannot be proven

29 Fact vs. Opinion Examples  The Revolutionary War started on April 19, 1775.  Historical fiction is the best genre of literature.  Chains is a fantastic book.  In Chains, the main character’s name is Isabel.

30 Exit Slip 1.Write two facts about my room. 2.Write two opinions about my room. 3.In your own words, summarize what historical fiction is.
