September 5, 2006 1 Burkhard Schmidt Integration and Installation Outline: Integration and Infrastructure issues -Suspended platforms -Cable chains -Beam plug -M1 Comments on the Installation schedule (an updated schedule will be given in Heidelberg)

September 5, 2006 2 Burkhard Schmidt Integration: Suspended Platforms Status: All 4 suspended platforms have been approved by SC/GS. We gained experience in the dis/re-mounting of the nacelles, which can be done now for the 4 nacelles in about 2-3 days. A nacelles of ~8m length had been assembled to work on the back side of M5A. Tests have to be repeated after each installation and SC has to be informed. -> New users have to get the instructions for safe use of the platforms by me.

September 5, 2006 3 Burkhard Schmidt Integration: Cable Chains Status and plans: Cable chains for M2-M5 and M1 are needed. Two companies visited CERN in July/August to discuss details of the requirements with us. The Technical Specifications for the M2-M5 chains are being finalized now and the Price Enquiry is going out. The chains should be delivered/installed in November. M2-M5 chains: Although basic ideas for the M1 chains exist, much more work is required to finalize the Specifications.

September 5, 2006 4 Burkhard Schmidt Integration: Cable Chains Positioning of M2-M5 chains:

September 5, 2006 5 Burkhard Schmidt Integration: Beam Plugs Status: Although the plugs were delivered already in March 2006, more design and machining work was needed on the iron blocks and plates surrounding the beam plugs. The installation itself was very complicated and had top be done in iterations. -> Installation will be completed this week

September 5, 2006 6 Burkhard Schmidt Integration: M1 Situation: Work on M1 integration has been resumed in August -> support beams etc. have to be installed now. -> We are very late, despite frequent pleads for help Aspects of mechanical engineering are taken up now by Alessandro Saputi. His contribution to M2-M5 is nearly completed. Many aspects are still floating due to the lack of manpower: –cable chains (design, positioning) –cooling system (positioning) –Installation procedure (conflict with beam pipe installation etc.) -> In order to avoid a disaster, an integration/installation review should be organized in October. A person in charge should be nominated !

September 5, 2006 7 Burkhard Schmidt Muon System Installation schedule Version of 20.06.2006:

September 5, 2006 8 Burkhard Schmidt Details of the new schedule

September 5, 2006 9 Burkhard Schmidt Muon System Installation Status Support panels A-side: Completed according to schedule. Traction systems rack structure: Delayed to very late delivery of the motor. Displacement of the structure without motor no problem (even preferential at this stage). Muon Station Alignment: The margin for the adjustment of M4 in z was insufficient to allow safe closing of the muon stations. Modifications on the fixation of M4 had to be carried out in August to allow closing of the C-side for work in the HCAL. This was possible due to strong contributions of collaborators from LNF and CERN. -> More details will be given in Heidelberg

September 5, 2006 10 Burkhard Schmidt Details of new schedule A-side M1

September 5, 2006 11 Burkhard Schmidt Muon System Installation Status Cabling: We are proceeding more or less according to schedule (we are about 1 week behind). Some problems with cable length and labels had to solved. We are finishing M5A this week. After some more preparation work next week we move to either M4A or M3C, depending on the availability of cables. The amount of cables increases significantly when going to M3/M2. This causes complications on the walls and in the rack structure. We have to avoid a mess ! ->The racks have to be prepared a.s.a.p. ! We get another PNPI technician and help from the CERN team for the cooling pipes in the racks. -> A supervisor from LNF has to be present from September 20

September 5, 2006 12 Burkhard Schmidt Muon System Installation Status Gas Piping: We had the usual difficulties in the startup. M5C has been finished by August 14, work is now going on on M5A (back), which has to be finished by September 15. We are about 2 weeks behind schedule, but the allocated time of 4 weeks/halfstation is ok, if 3 people are available for the work.

September 5, 2006 13 Burkhard Schmidt Details of new installation schedule Chamber installation is likely to start now early October. Much parallelism early 2007

September 5, 2006 14 Burkhard Schmidt Comments and conclusions Thanks to the strong contribution of those who worked in the pit or in the lab instead of enjoying the beach in July/August, we are following much better the schedule now than in spring and are only about 2 weeks behind. The new start date for chamber installation (October) depends on the availability of tools to test the chambers, mainly the connectivity. We have to increase the manpower for chamber testing/installation/commissioning to follow the schedule during the coming months.
