AGE OF RENEWABLE POWER SYSTEMS – TRANSFORMATION OF ISLAND POWER SYSTEMS 25th PPA Conference & Trade Exhibition Brendon Bateman 5 th August 2016

NEED FOR STRATEGIC PLANNING

COMMON TECHNOLOGY TRAPS MEDIUM VS HIGH SPEED DIESELS Do they really have higher fuel efficiency? What about their cost, size, weight? How do they help power systems achieve high renewable energy penetration?

COMMON TECHNOLOGY TRAPS POWER SYSTEM SERVICES

COMMON TECHNOLOGY TRAPS BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS Excellent for straight-forward use in smaller power systems with limited need for power system stability In larger systems need to be paired with other enabling technologies to provide reliable power system operation

INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCERS Utilities have a responsibility towards reliable power supply of a community, while IPPs are driven by profit IPP generators should provide full power system support just like diesel generators are, to be fairly compared to existing generation.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE STAFF Moving away from usual diesel fitters and electricians Renewable energy technologies are new technologies and require new skill sets Operations and maintenance crews need to be trained in informational technologies and complex control systems.

A COLLABORATIVE, MULTI-DISCIPLINARY PROJECT APPROACH

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION
