EDISON INTERNATIONAL® SM Green Technology and Renewable Energy Opportunities 4 th Annual India Trade Conference, June 23, 2011 Cerritos CA Gary Barsley Manager of Customer Self-Generation Programs Southern California Edison

EDISON INTERNATIONAL® SM  One of the largest electric utilities in the U.S. with 125 years of service  Service Area – 50,000 square miles – Over 180 cities  Population Served – 13 million residents – 4.9 million customer accounts  Industry leader in renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric transportation, smart grid and smart metering About Southern California Edison

EDISON INTERNATIONAL® SM System Reliability Price Stability Environmental Considerations  Balance objectives through CPUC/CEC’s “loading order”: – Energy Efficiency; Demand Response – Renewable Resources – Distributed Generation – Clean and Efficient Fossil-Fired Generation SCE’s Long-Term Resource Objectives Integration of Renewables Must Consider and Satisfy These Objectives

EDISON INTERNATIONAL® SM Biomass 7% Geothermal 53% Solar 6% Wind 29% Small Hydro 5% 2010 Renewable Resources (14.5 billion kWh) 2010 20% RPS (goal) 2020 Potential 33% RPS (goal) 89% Increase SCE Renewable Resource % of Total Delivered Portfolio: 19.4% SCE 2010 20% Renewable Energy Goal Contracts are in place to meet 20% of customers ’ energy requirement with renewable resources through flexible compliance. SCE Delivers More Renewable Power Than Any Other Utility in the Country

EDISON INTERNATIONAL® SM Solar PV Growth At SCE  Solar PV is the fastest growing resource in our renewable portfolio.  As the cost of solar PV declines, the more of it we can purchase cost-effectively. Deliveries from Solar Contracts Executed Before Aug 2009 Deliveries from All Solar Contracts To-Date Solar Thermal Solar PV Rooftop Solar PV Ground Mount

EDISON INTERNATIONAL® SM SCE’s Comprehensive Approach to Solar Utility Scale Distributed Solar 250 MW Utility Owned 250 MW IPP Commercial Warehouse Rooftop Installations 1-2 MW Contracts (Avg) Customer Owned Distributed Solar California Solar Initiative Up to 1 MW Incentives Follow Declining Tier Structure Utility Scale Solar Procurement RPS Solicitations Bilateral Contracts Feed-in Tariffs Renewable Solar Contracts (to be Renewable Auction Mechanism) Medium SmallLarge Power Deliveries Count Toward “RPS” Goals  While many options exist for renewables developers, the magnitude of RPS goals drives SCE to procure large volumes through its competitive solicitations.  SCE has also found value in utility scale distributed solar as a means to achieve RPS compliance and provide greater flexibility in our procurement portfolio.

EDISON INTERNATIONAL® SM Utility Implications of larger volumes of Solar  Solar PV is one of our fastest growing renewable resources, but also one of the most difficult to forecast  Intermittency Challenges Lower Cost  Larger Supply  Greater Output Variability of Portfolio Energy storage has potential to mitigate need for back-up generation and could resolve intermittency issues, but not yet technically or economically feasible for utilities

EDISON INTERNATIONAL® SM Thank You. Gary Barsley Manager of Customer Self-Generation Programs Southern California Edison Gary.Barsley@sce.com
