Schedule and Milestones Colin Whyte STFC RAL Resource Loaded Schedule Review 5 th April 2016

Schedule: Step IV. Data-taking until end 2016 – possible use of 2016/05 in Feb-March 2017. Decay Solenoid. – Returned – repaired – recommissioned – returned to service. QP/QD New system designed by FNAL - FPGA channels – reprogramming at FNAL Installation plan by S Griffiths @ DL commissioning starts May 2016. Hydrogen system X-ray investigation of internal absorber body ‘crack’- not of concern Vacuum end-caps progressing through PED 5500. Heat load modelling in progress – plan to improve emissivity, reduce heat load. Ongoing co-operation with original designer Prof. Shigeru Ishimoto Pre-cool magnet coil before return to MICE Hall – save 21 day cool-down period. Cooling water system. Require split system Support from ISIS, additional cooler. 2

Schedule UK Costs and funding Baseline schedule as created from ‘MICE Demonstration of Ionisation Cooling’ 3 options for MICE Cooling Demonstration presented: Full Cost Flat Cash + 10% Flat Cash MICE UK Oversight Committee requested additional options: De-scope options Funding below flat cash reduced RF power Stop at step IV. 3

UK Cost to Complete 4 Cost cutting exercise to level out to achieve Flat +10% & Flat Further work being carried in preparation for the upcoming Cost to Completion review. 4 Alan Grant

Schedule RF Project Project includes offline testing of the RF cavities. RF staff resource requirement levelled due to re-planning caused by SS. RF personnel supplemented with additional key staff in controls RF engineer co-operation with ISIS progessing well RF expert development through ISIS/Cern collaboration. Staff from IHEP, China, equivalent 1+FTE RF relevant Mechanical installation confined space access and working considerations – potential knock-on effects. Design services/power for south PRY plate removal – potential knock-on effects. PRY design tolerances tightened where appropriate. Floor plates/translation stages ordered. RF co-axial line design advanced Clean room facility in procurement. Bellows. Flange flatness. 5

Risk 7 New Risk Added Failure of Upstream Spectrometer Solenoid Magnet Failure of M2 in SSD. Failure of Helium space feedthrough in SSD. Cannot agree program and budget SSD delivery on schedule, quality & cost After mitigation 7

Magnet purchase cost comparison 8 Note differing contingency rate Full magnet 10% cold mass only 20%

Tracking Milestones 9

Conclusion Step IV progressing well – data taking now routine Analysed data presented weekly at hall meetings. Risk to physics now reduced to H2 and SSD Efficient transition from commissioning to data-taking New DC role Cooling demonstration. Mechanical aspects well understood and off critical path. RF program now suitably resourced and on schedule to de- risk this FY SSD recovery: Alternative procurement options from UK. Now require full quotes Prioritise procurement risk profile. 10
