Mr. Brooks Foundations of Technology

 Examine and analyze open and closed fluid systems in terms of common components and basic design.

 You will be able to:  Differentiate between hydraulic and pneumatic systems and provide examples of each.

 A group of resources (subsystems) working together to solve problems or extend our human capabilities.

 Hydraulic system : a system that uses the properties of liquids (usually an oil-based product) to generate, transmit, and control power.  Pneumatic system : a system that uses compressed gas to generate, transmit, and control power.

 Examples include:  Vehicle lift  Construction equipment  Vehicle cooling system

 Reservoir : Holds the hydraulic fluid  Valve : Controls the fluid flow  Pump : Supplies fluid under pressure to the system  Cylinder : Uses pressurized fluid to do work  Piston : The rod inside of a cylinder that moves back and forth

 Examples Include:  Bicycle pump  Medical and dental tools  Mechanic tools

 Compressor : Supplies pressurized air to the system.  Reservoir tank : maintains a supply of air for the tools to use.  Regulator : Controls the amount of air pressure in the system.

 Open system : a system that is not pressurized and relies on gravity as the force that moves the fluid. Example: aqueduct or a water wheel  Closed system : a system that is pressurized and does not rely on gravity.

 P= F / A Since the pressure in the system is the same throughout, the pressure in cylinder 1 = the pressure in cylinder 2. Therefore: F1/A1 =F2/A2

 In your groups, you will go to www.grc.nasa.gov www.grc.nasa.gov  Once there, search for Pascal’s Law in the search box.  Open Pascal’s Principles and Hydraulics.  Read and do problems 1-4
