1 Slang and Language Change UNIT 1

2 Unit Objectives  Practice effective listening and note-taking strategies;  Prepare to listen to the lecture about slang and communication through class discussions and developing new academic vocabulary;  Identify the main ideas and supporting details in the lecture on slang;  Practice the following discussion strategies: agreeing, asking for clarification or confirmation, and paraphrasing.  Summarize the content of the lecture on slang using your lecture notes;  Make a presentation on slang;  Identify and use sequence markers (e.g., first, next, finally).

3 Connect to the Topic  Look at the cartoon and identify the slang term used in it.  What’s the meaning of the slang word?  List 4 more slang words/ expressions you know.  Write 2 sentences with 2 of the words you listed.

4 Build the Vocabulary  Write one sentence with each collocation*.  Pass your paper to the person next to you. You have 1 minute to add a new sentence to the paper.

5 Focus Your Attention  To start/ begin with,…  First,…(Second,...; Third,…)  Next,…  Then…  Moving on…  Let’s move on to…  Another point/ idea…  Last,…  Finally,…  What sequence markers do you hear in the short lecture?

6 Homework  Watch videos on slang. Follow the link below: http://www.learnerstv.com/Free-Language-Video-lectures-ltv203-Page1.htm  As you go through the lessons, take notes on the slang expressions used in each video and their meanings.  Turn in your notes on Tuesday, September 8 th.
