International Association of Independent Tanker Owners 260 members worldwide 2650 tankers oil and chemical tankers 70% world independent tanker fleet 300+ associate members non-governmental organisation (UN-IMO) Zero pollution Zero fatalities Zero detentions Tanker Shipping - INTERTANKO

Energy security and climate change are the two most significant challenges facing humanity. The tanker industry therefore finds itself in the unenviable position of having to consider how it meets both these challenges at the same time; the challenge of maintaining an efficient and secure supply of energy as a vital link in the supply chain, while at the same time having to consider how it will meet the challenges of reducing air emissions and minimising its subsequent contribution to global climate change. But tankers are also associated with one other significant form of pollution... 2007 세계해양포럼 Tanker Shipping - Clean and Efficient

Tonnes spilt per billion tonne-mile transported So long as we have a demand we will have a risk… Tanker Shipping– An Improving Record 2007 세계해양포럼

Air emissions Efficient, effective and environmentally sound cargo carriers Tanker Shipping – Good today... Source: NTM (Swedish Network for Transport and the Environment) Comparative carbon dioxide emissionsComparative air pollutants 2007 세계해양포럼

Air emissions – unregulated and regulated Greenhouse gas emissions – CO 2 –Trim-optimisation –Improved weather routing –Silicon coatings technology (hull and propeller) –Ship design (i.e. hull/propeller improvements, wind drag, etc.) –Alternative energies (i.e., biodiesel, solar, wind, fuel cell) Air pollution (MARPOL) – SOx, NOx and Particulate Matter (PM) –Regulating the cause – INTERTANKO; ‘cleaner fuel’ –Global ruling SOx: 60 - 80% PM: 80 - 90% NOx: 15% No heavy metals Less soot Tanker Shipping –...even better tomorrow 2007 세계해양포럼
