Summary (chapter 4~6)  Become the leader of the sled team.  A series of rapid trips → exhausted  Their poor plan and mistreatment from new owner, Hal and their families make dogs die or half-die.  John Thornton rescues Buck, beaten by Hal.  Buck loves John Thornton deeply.  John bets on whether Buck will be able to pull 1000 pounds and Buck’s victory brings him 1600 dollars.

4 1. Summary (chapter 7)  John Thornton’s group departs a journey to the east to find a fabled gold mine. After months of travel into the wilderness, they find a field of gold and settle down to mine it.  While John amasses gold, Buck ranges further and further into the wilderness.

5  One night he begins to follow a wild timber wolf off into the forest. Buck spends increasing amounts of time in the woods. Buck lets his inner beast emerge. Tracking and killing a large moose, he hones his speed and strength.  He returns to the camp and find that Thornton and the team have been killed by the Yeehats. Enraged, Buck attacks the tribe and kills many of them in revenge. 1. Summary

6  In grief he returns to the forest, with no further ties to civilization. He encounters his “wild wolf brother,” the timber wolf. After establishing his dominance, Buck is accepted into the pack and fully embraces the call of the wild.  In the years to come, the Yeehats pass down a legend of a “Ghost Dog” and an “Evil Spirit” that continues to haunt them. 1. 11 London prescribes the wild nature as a feature which makes our lives healthy under the belief that all organisms follow the same principle for survival. He penetrates the common instinct shared by dogs and human beings through the viewpoint of a dog who can exert his instinct properly. London worries about human beings’ becoming overly civilized and their falling into weakness as a result of losing their healthy wild nature.
