3. Chapter 1 11. The dog who didn’t obey was killed.

15. Buck has gone from a civilized culture of California to the primitive environment of the Klondike.

4. Chapter 2
1. Life on Dyea Beach was a nightmare as it was confusing and lawless. (Law of Club and Fang) (as opposed to the law of love and fellowship at Judge Millers)
2. Curly was attacked and killed by another dog (taught him not to get knocked off of his feet).
3. Buck hates Spitz, because he is cruel and he is the leader. (Buck wants to be lead dog).
4. Buck is now a sled dog.
5. Dave and Sol-leks (the angry one) both want to be left alone.
6. Buck slept in the snow (he learned by watching other dogs).

5. Chapter 2 7. Buck’s job is to deliver dispatches (mail)
8. Buck was hitched between Dave and Soleks to learn.
9. Perrault was a good owner as he used webbed snow shoes to help push down the snow for the dogs.
10. Buck got 1 ½ pounds of salmon because he was bigger.

6. Chapter 3 1. Spitz treats Buck as an enemy.
2. The fight between Buck and Spitz was interrupted by the starving huskies.
3. The nine dogs spent the night in the forest.
4. Perrault was worried about the 400 mile run to Dawson? Wounded dogs and ½ of the rations were gone.
5. Perrault builds a fire one dozen times a day: to un freeze the water; it is 50 below zero.

7. Chapter 3 6. Buck was too tired to eat; he also had sore feet.
7. Buck would turn over and wait for his foot gear (boots)
8. Francois axed Dolly to save Buck.
9. Francois whipped Spitz because he attacked Buck.
10. There was a war over leadership.
Simile: comparison using like or as:
Jaws like a steel trap
Metaphor: a comparison of two things by saying one thing is something else. Ex. Life was near the surface (of Spitz’ throat) Blood is compared to life.

8. Chapter 3 11. Francois whipped Buck as he was defending Pike.
12. Buck’s howl in Dawson shows the emergence of his inner beast (instinct). He is answering the call of the wild.
13. Dogs robbed fish from him; Dub and Joe fought him (Spitz).
14. Buck was most joyful when he was chasing the rabbit.
15. The fight started when Spitz killed the rabbit.

9. Chapter 4
1. Buck would not go into his normal place as he wanted leadership.
2. Buck is a superior lead dog as the team is making record time.
3. Francois says that Buck is worth 1,000 dollars as he broke two dogs in.
4. The trip was a record run as they made 40 miles per day.
5. The new owner is the Scottish half breed owner. He is a mail carrier.

10. Chapter 4 6. Buck didn’t like the run as it is monotonous.
7. Buck would dream of Judge Miller and his ancestors from years passed.
8. The hairy man from another world was a cave man that Buck’s ancestors worked with.
9. Snow made for heavier pulling for the dogs.
10. Dave suffered the most as he was sick.
11. Dave died when he was shot.

11. Lit terms:
Cliché: a commonly overused phrase: opposites attract, one in the hand is worth two in the bush, haste makes waste. The early bird gets the worm.
Personification: giving something non human human qualities. The wind whispered through the trees. The tunnels belched out cars.

12. Chapter 5
1. The group was in a wretched state as they were limping, lost weight, and they are tired.

3. Buck didn’t get a rest as he was immediately sold.
4. Description of the Americans: Hal: 19 year old brother, Charles: mustached husband, Mercedes: a “lady”

13. Chapter 5
6. Hal, Charles, and Mercedes are unfit for the north as they disorganized; unprepared.
7. They should not have a tent on the trip because it is spring, and it overloads the sled.
8. The dogs were tired; the runners where frozen.
9. The Americans take the advice of ½ the load and twice the dogs by discarded essentials.
dogs is too many because there are not enough rations.

14. Chapter 5
11. There is no order or discipline in the manner that the Americans did things.
12. ¼ of the trip was gone and ½ the food was gone. So they started underfeeding.
13. They all quarreled because of stress.
14. Mercedes rode on the sled because she was a “lady.”
15. Hal traded his gun for horse hide (for dog food).
16. The dogs were bags of bones (metaphor) as they are starving.
18. The ice is unsafe for them to travel.
19. Cliché: it is idle to get between a fool and his folly.

15. Chapter 5
20. Buck had given up. He knew he had no chance with those owners.
21. John Thornton saved him and took him away.
22. The Americans fell through the ice and died.

16. Chapter 6
1. John Thornton’s friends left him beside the river as his feet are frozen.
2. Skeet licked Buck’s wounds.
3. Thornton aroused love in Buck.
4. Man roughed Buck; Buck bit his hand.
5. Buck feared losing Thornton.
6. Buck is called more and more by the call of the wild.
7. Buck went to jump over a cliff. He trusts Thornton.

17. Chapter 6 8. When Burton went after Thornton, Buck tore his throat.
9. Buck swam to Thornton and took him a rope.
10. Buck pulled 1,000 pound sled.
11. The odds changed because the sled was frozen.
12. Gee! Haw! Mush!
13. The man wanted to buy Buck because he pulled 1,000 pound sled 100 yards.

18. Chapter 7 1. They spent the 1,600 dollars on the lost mine.
2. They traveled to the lost mine by land.
3. They found a broad valley first.
4. Buck dreamed of following the hairy man (symbol of the wild).
5. Buck ran free to appease these desires.
6. The timber wolf was making the night call.
7. The wolf wanted him to follow.
8. He was happy as he was answering the call of the wild.

19. Chapter 7 9. He left the wolf to return to Thornton. 10. Buck hunted.
11. Buck becomes a killer in the wild.
12. He was persistent in killing the bull moose.
13. The Yeehats flee because Buck is killing them.
14. Yeehat arrows killed Thornton.
15. Buck no longer stayed as Thornton was dead.
16. Buck joined the pack after killing the leaders.
