2 Politics  Virginia’s Colonial Assembly  “House of Burgesses”  Bicameral Legislature: a lawmaking body made up of two, or more, houses.  Maryland  Toleration Act of 1649: Made restricting the rights of Christians a crime.

3 Social  Maryland  Religious refuge for Catholics  Georgia  Created for poor English citizens, or “debtors”

4 Economics  Watch the following video and answer:  How do the Southern colonies make money?  What are two ways the Southern colonies differ from the Northern, or New England, colonies.

5 Economics  Warm climate & long growing season allowed farmers to grow cash crops.  Cash crops: Crops that are sold for profit  Tobacco, rice, indigo  Labor: Cash crops required many workers!  Slaves were used  Slave codes: laws to control slaves.
