Working at the Intersections: Promoting Access and Accountability 2016 STOP Administrators and Coalition Directors Joint Meeting March 30, 2016

JDI’s Mission Just Detention International is a health and human rights organization that seeks to end sexual violence in all forms of detention.

JDI’s Goals 1.Hold government officials accountable 2.Change public attitudes about sexual violence behind bars 3.Ensure that survivors get the help they need

JDI’s Core Belief

“This was, in a word, enslavement. My body no longer belonged to me, but to someone else — to my ‘husband,’ a rapist who totally controlled my life with the constant threat of violence.” Rodney, prisoner rape survivor

Frank Mendoza, JDI Survivor Council member “Even though I was never convicted of a crime, I received a life sentence of pain and hurt from the abuse I suffered at the hands of a guard.”

“For eighteen months, I was subjected to a system of gang-run sexual slavery. I was an openly gay, first-time offender convicted of nonviolent drug charges — in other words, a target.” Roderick, prisoner rape survivor

“I can still remember him whispering in my ear during the rape: ‘Do you think you’re the only one? Don’t even think of telling, because it’s your word against mine, and you will lose. Who do you think they will believe, an inmate or a fine upstanding officer like me?’” Marilyn, prisoner rape survivor

Ivory, prisoner rape survivor “Often, people think that you deserve whatever happens to you in prison because you have committed a crime. But no one should be sexually assaulted by an officer. Inmates have no power to protect themselves, so we rely on the officers to make it a safe environment.”

“I used to feel shame and humiliation about what happened to me in that Texas jail. Eventually, I came to realize that it was not my shame — it was my country’s shame.” Tom Cahill, prisoner rape survivor and former JDI President
