9 Spread of Civilization in East Asia Feudal System  Emperor: Total ruler (Doesn’t always have control)  Shogun: Supreme general of the army  Daimyo: lords or wealthy landowners  Samurai: loyal warriors of the Daimyo  Peasants, merchants, artisans (90% of pop)

Keep the essential question in mind and look back in the text if you need to. Highlight and underline important parts of your notes.
